Review: Chanel Mat Lumiere Luminous Matte Powder Makeup - SPF 10

My skin-type: Oily-combination skin type.

Requirement - A mattifying foundation BUT I don't want a matte look! Yes, i know, thats pretty contradictory, but somehow the matte finish products just made me look dull and ashy and generally unwell; anything else just made my face oily and/or caused breakouts.

My search for the ideal foundation has been on for quite some time. Started with Lakme souffle, liked it, but it really didn't make any difference to my face. Have tried Avon which is pretty good at mattifying, but I tend to get this cakey-ashy look with it. Discovered mineral makeup - Maybelline mineral foundation - pretty good, at least it didn't cause any of my usual skin break-outs. Again the problem with the dull look if I put too much, and a light coverage would never last more than 2 hours. Finally, I gave up and was using just powder - no foundation. Always envied the clean fresh look on other people but was resigned to never getting it myself until I found this :-)

I haven't the faintest idea why I decided to try a Chanel foundation, but whatever the reasons, I am so glad I did. I got this from the counter at Lifestyle, Kormanagala. Was recommended the shade Extreme by the SA there. I think this is the darkest shade they have. When he tried it on me, it was like I did not have anything extra on my skin, just a more even skin tone. I have tried their powder, and so was pretty confident this won't be causing any breakouts either.

Now for the packaging...the foundation comes in the typical Chanel glossy black case - BIG case - with the interlocking Cs. The glossy case is superclassy but is also a fingerprint magnet and will get easily scratched. Not a problem - it comes with a velvet pouch.. just slide it on and put the case into the bag..right alongside the bunch of keys!

Open the case, and there is a BIG mirror. All those times when I have gone to the mall, and the mirrors in the rest rooms were just mobbed...not a problem any more. I can see the whole world in this mirror! There are two sections - one holding the foundation and the other for the sponge that comes with it. The section holding the sponge has vents, so the sponge stays dry and clean. I don't use the sponge, so that has been dumped aside, and I use the brush that the super-friendly SA gave me instead. I think this comes with the Vitalumiere foundation.

Product description: This is a very very smooth powder. Gives a very light coverage which is just what I want. Does give heavier coverage if used with a dampened sponge or just building up with the brush.

The good:

1. Best for oily-combination or oily skin. No break-outs, pimples, and oil-control the whole day. Lasts on me the whole day - morning to evening - no touch ups or blotting needed.

2. It gives a matte finish, yet not very harsh. The Chanel website describes this as luminous matte powder makeup - and that pretty much sums it up. As the day wears on, I know my skin is getting oilier, but all I see is a natural-looking healthy glow. Not shiny or even dewy - more like I have really good skin.

3. Comes with SPF 10, so get some added sun protection too, though I always use a sunscreen.

4. The best part - REFILLS. The section which holds the foundation is a removable slot. Just remove the old used up case and insert the new refill case. And the refills are just a tad cheaper. I feel good about not having to throw out the case - less wastage :-)

The bad:

1. There are only 6 shades available in India (amn't too sure of this number). My shade - Extreme. I thought this looked a little dark on me, but it actually matches my skin shade perfectly. I think its very essential to get the correct shade with this product, and I was really lucky the SA convinced me on this. On my own, I would probably have picked a lighter shade (Yes, you may roll your eyes at me allll you want!).

2. Absolutely NOT for dry skin or even combination-dry skin. Have to ensure skin is very well moisturized, even a little on the oilier side is good. For an AC environment, I personally won't use this at all - I got dry patches the one time I used this to office. From the Chanel lineup, Vitalumiere would be a better alternative for drier skins. Oily skin gals - we are good to go!

3. This is Chanel, so will get your wallet flying faster than tying it to a helium balloon. The refills are, as I said before, a bit cheaper, though.

Cost: Rs. 3050 for the regular version; Rs. 2250 for the refills (check info at counter - is not the amount I paid).

For me, having wasted enough money buying foundations which have ultimately been discarded, coughing up the money on this was okay. Plus, I don't need to use this on an everyday basis - weekly once or twice is all I see of the outside world. I can live with the pricing, love this foundation, and will definitely repurchase, but this is not a budget buy. There are loads of less and lot less expensive foundations that do a pretty good job - it's all about finding the one that suits.

4. I have read people have issues/problems using talc-based products, so check ingredient list.

Ingredients: Talc • Boron Nitride • Dimethicone • Silica • CI 77891/Titanium Dioxide • Octyldodecyl Lactate • Caprylyl Methicone • Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate • Isopropyl Isostearate • Lauryl Lactate • Bis Hydroxyethoxypropyl Dimethicone/IPDI Copolymer Ethylcarbamate • Potassium Sorbate • Zinc Stearate • Methylparaben • Propylparaben • Polyisoprene • Zinc Oxide • Tetradibutyl Pentaerithrityl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate

  1. Sounds like a real treat ;D

It is good the SA helped u match your skin correctly. Generally most SAs try and sell a lighter shade even when you keep emphasising that you want one that matches..

  3. It was a treat Tanveer :-) Ya, the SA there was pretty confident, and they have this nice mirror there, I don't know if its there at other counters too..you can change the lighting on it to candle light, day light, etc., so it gives a pretty accurate idea.

  4. Ruby, its is pricey :-) I love going to the Chanel counter cos the SAs there are such fun about trying out different shades, especially if there is no one at the counter to hurry them.

  8. Chanel products are on the expensive side but as you said it is more about finding a product which suits you. I love their Pro Lumiere foundation and crayon pencils.

  18. agree with you, having spent loads of money of cheaper foundations or powders that all go to waste, this seems a good option.
