Chizu Saeki Lotion Mask

I learned about the lotion mask in the book The Japanese Skin Care Revolution - Chizu Saeki (read review here).  The lotion mask is a simple yet efficient way to restore some much-needed moisture to the skin.  The theory is that as the skin hydrates and plumps up, the pores get closed and the skin appears smooth and nourished.  I tried it and loved it, so thought of sharing it here.

Items Needed for the Lotion Mask

Cotton: I use the Body Shop Cotton Squares which I bought specifically for this purpose - larger size square ones which come in a pack of 50.  Each cotton square can be separated into 3 layers.  Cost: Rs. 265.  Bodyshop also sells smaller sized round cotton pads, and while those are good for general use, they don't work very well for the lotion mask.

Water: Use clean, drinking water, without too much of mineral residue in it.

Softener/Alcohol-free toner
:  I use Shiseido The Skincare hydro-balancing softener (review here).  The book does not recommend any specific brand but suggests using an alcohol-free product or one with very low alcohol content in it. My friend has tried the same using Fabindia Lavender Toner, and she loves it.

Chizu Saeki Lotion Mask - Technique/How To

  • I use 2 cotton squares for each time.  The number and method will need to be adjusted according to the size/shape of a different cotton.
  • Wet the 2 squares with water and then squeeze out the water by pressing between palms.
  • Place the 2 squares over each other and dispense about 2-3 squirts of the softener over the top square.  Don't put the lotion in just one area.  Instead, try to cover a larger area of the square.  Press the two squares lightly so the softener spreads down into both squares.
  • Now separate each square into 3 layers and use these layers to cover your face.  Wet your face before placing the cotton square.  It helps the cotton stick better to the skin.
  • Lie back and relax for at least 5 minutes. I keep it on for about 10 minutes. Remove and discard the cotton squares.
  • Moisturize as usual.
The basic principle of this mask is to cover the skin with a thin layer of moist cotton.  As the skin stays in contact with the cotton it absorbs the moisture from the cotton and plumps up.
Try this for 3 days, and you are going to see an awesome difference in your skin. I felt like my skin looked so healthy. My friend met me after I had been using this for about 5 days, and she immediately remarked on how good my skin was looking.  And no, I had not told her I was going to try this, so her reaction was totally unbiased.

  1. Oh Wow, this sounds very interesting.. I will def try this out. Can we like use a thin cotton cloth instead of the cotton sheets?

  2. It might, Tanveer. I didn't find anything suitable though :-( The intention is to keep the moist surface in really close contact with the skin...not just draped over, it should be smoothed over the skin like a mask. It might work with a really thin cotton..try it and do let me know.

  3. Isn't it some what similar to the way we do deep pore oil cleansing Rads?

can i use green tea toner and dip them and use it in the similar way?

  4. Anamika, I have never used a green tea toner, so I won't know for sure. The purpose of this mask is just to ensure better penetration of the toner/softener into the deeper skin layers, because the moist cotton stays in close contact with skin for some time. As long as you are okay with the ingredients in the green tea toner you use, I think it should work just fine. Just make sure its alcohol-free or has very less alcohol, because then it might just irritate the skin if used this way.
