Review: Lancome Hydra Zen Neurocalm Cream-Gel

Some time back, my sister bought a Lancome toner - Tonique Douceur. Not someone who is prone to going gaga over anything skincare related, she seemed very impressed with Lancome's skincare line. That's what got me interested in Lancome and after getting my skin checked up at the counter, I got a list of products recommended for my specific skin concerns. Since I was almost out of my regular moisturizer, I decided to give this a try. After trying it out for about 3 weeks now, I have to say, my sister is right :-)

The Hydra Zen range from Lancome consists of a range of products recommended for sensitive skin, claiming to soothe skin that has been stressed by environmental factors and emotional tension. Hydra Zen Neurocalm (Neocalm in some countries?) is a basic moisturizer which is suitable for all skin types. I was recommended this for two reasons:
  • My skin tends to be sensitive to many creams - no, I do not break out into rashes at the slightest, but I get pimples pretty soon if my skin is not too happy with the moisturizer.
  • I have a mix of oily and dry zones in my face, which pretty much rules out both the oilier creams as well as most mattifying products.
Packaging: Lancome is a luxury brand, and in my opinion, it means everything should be just perfect, and of course packaging is included in that. The pretty pink glass tub that holds the product comes nestled in this white box. Gets all the points for the packaging :-)

The actual product itself is best described as on the box: A refreshing, water-based, oil-free texture for a unique sensorial experience: the comfort of a cream, the delicate lightness of a gel. Ideal in warm seasons. The only thing I would add to this - a faint soothing fragrance and a pale pink colour. Blends like a dream, and it does feel soothing to me.

I do wish there was a recycling program for all these pretty jars. I cannot think of any use for this once I empty it, and I would feel really bad just tossing it in the bin.

Claims that work?
  • Hydra Zen's soothing action: Immediate relief for "stressed" sensitive skin. By sensitive skin, I don't think Lancome means skin that has had an allergic reaction. I think its meant for skin which is reacting to factors such as dust, varying humidity levels, etc. That clarified, I think this does a good job as a good basic moisturizer. It is "just right." Not oily, not dry..leaves the skin perfectly moisturized.
  • It has a fragrance. I know this is a big no-no for many people, but I personally love it. It reminds me of roses, but is not too sweet a smell. Very mild, and to me, it does seem soothing.
  • Intense hydration, immediately and for 24 hours: It does give immediate hydration, you can almost feel the moisture calming your skin when you apply it. For 24 hours? Never kept it on that long but my face never felt dry throughout the day.
  • NeuroCalm complex combined with Centella asiatica extract: I did not find any mention of Centella asiatica in the ingredient list. Of course, I am not very well-informed about all the ingredients in the list, so never know. Would be happy to correct this if anyone explains it to me :-) To know more about this particular ingredient - Wikipedia to the rescue - you can read about it here.

Alcohol denat is pretty high up in the ingredient list. That I know is a problem for many many people. I come in the undecided category. I used to be absolutely against alcohol-containing products, I am after all a HUGE Lush fan :-) I still prefer to use alcohol-free toners/softening lotions. That said, I have used a few moisturizer now that contain alcohol, and I have not noticed any extra drying of the skin. I read somewhere that the quantity of alcohol in these moisturizers is small enough to evaporate off easily when we apply the product and also to ensure that the gel/cream is not too oily. With this specific product, I have had absolutely no problem because of the alcohol content from what I can see/feel on my skin. However, I think its important to look at ingredient lists and make a decision based on that and, of course, trying out a sample/tester is always a good idea.

Cost: Rs. 3100/50 mL

Verdict: Lancome is a luxury brand, so if you don't mind paying the price, this is a very good basic moisturizer. It did not break me out or make my skin oilier, and in fact, my skin does look better when I am using this. I usually reserve this for the night, and use a Shiseido moisturizer for the day time. No particular reason other than I have to finish that too :-) I have tried this as a day time moisturizer, and it is just fine. However, I have not tried this in the summers, so cannot give an opinion on how it would hold up to our Indian summers.

Btw, u know Rads, with yr zillion posts on LUSH, you have now begun to tempt me a lot to try out their stuff. Wanted a recco from you if possible, Lush moisturiser for dry skin?

  2. Hehehee..I do have a lot of Lush posts na. Moisturiser..try Celestial (for face). Its meant for sensitive skins, with almond milk, vanilla water, is the best I think for dry skins. Plus its among the lower end ones at Lush at Rs. 1210. The ones they market specifically for drier skin are richer - both in content and price tag :D

  3. Actually na Tanveer, you should try their new serum bars..they have one for drier skins - Amazing Grace. Not tried it myself though, but I think it might be good.

  5. Dear Rads,

This is such a cool product. The more I read your reviews about Lancome the more I get tempted to give it a try.

As I have oily skin I tend to lean towards gel based products and this one sounds perfect.

    Thanks for the review.

    Have a great day ahead.

    regards

  12. Hi Rajni...this is the first time I am trying anything from Lancome, and I really liked it :-) What would be your picks from Lancome?

  13. pretty bottle but you know their huge ingredients list kind of scares me. Infact sometimes I get confused whether all these chemically lab tested products are better for skin or the natural lush kind of products.

The packaging is super cute though...I am still wondering...

  14. You know I am one big Lushie, and for almost a year I was using only Lush products, toner, cream, everything. My skin really improved, but I still did get the occasional pimples. So I am a little confused now, to try these products which seem to work great or try Lush whose ingredients are more comforting :-(

  15. Hey.. I got 2 samples of this... yay... The SA asked me to use this in the night.. I got Lancome Pure Focus moisturizer and I use that in the morning

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yaa..I think it would be perfect used that way. Did you like the Pure Focus moisturizer?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I do like Pure Focus.. Its the lightest moisturizer I've used so far but the price hurts :(

  18. I guess so..the toner is around 2000 so I am assuming this is higher :D I was recommended most products from that line, but I had a bit of dryness too on my forehead area, the SA told me to pick this instead.

  19. I forgot to tell u. I had got Angels on Bare skin sometime in March - April. Have been using it since then and I quite like it.

Thinking of getting a moisturiser now, but the prices are scaring me :(

  20. Ya..and the SA says they last a long while, but really they last only as much as the usual ones. Thats why I suggested the serum bar...I think I got the name wrong - its full of grace. Its like a bar, and you rub it over your face, and its cheaper than the moisturizer :-) Can use as a night thing

  22. Oh..woww..I got a sample of Genifique, yet to try it though. Got some samples tubes of the Blanc Expert serum..loving it..was thinking of buying the tube when I am done with the samples. Thanks for your recommendations :-)
