Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner - Charcoal/Charbon

Gel reinvents liner with an oil-free formula that holds highly concentrated pigments in a clear gel base, smudge-proof and waterwproof for 24 hours, the most intense line for lasting drama.

In my search for a drugstore option for gel liners, I picked up two shades of Maybelline Eyestudio gel eyeliners.  The shade I am reviewing today is Charcoal/Charbon.

A greyish-black liner with a shimmery frostiness to it, this is a beautiful colour especially if you want something not quite black but definitely not a boring grey.  This might be the only time I am going to actually say that I love frost!  All Maybelline gel liners come with a brush for lining and unlike the useless brushes/applicators that I have seen with a lot of products (especially eyeshadows!), this brush is actually very nice.  I would have preferred it a bit thinner, probably because I am used to my miniature angled TBS brush, but I think most people won't have anything to complain about.

As I said earlier, this is a frosty dark grey shade.  Maybelline claims it is smudgeproof and waterproof for 24 hours.  I have not tried this for 24 hours, but these are the swatches - the first one is the original swatch and the second one is the same swatch after I did a bit of dishwashing :D

Not exactly the same after that intensive water-testing, but I don't think any of us are going to be washing dishes with our eyelids, so this does seem waterproof enough to me!  And it didn't smudge either (on the swatch).  However, when I did use this, it miraculously managed to transfer over to my eyelid (the crease area)!  Guess I should have waited a bit for the liner to dry.  The original eyeliner line got a little lighter and I had a light greyish line in my crease, though, because I am a darker skinned person this was not that noticeable :P :P  Anyway here's the instructions on use (on the cover) and the liner on my eyes:

On my eyes, it seems like an almost black grey with the
frostiness making the shade look a bit more alive!

Final look as shown on the cover.

Verdict:  I liked the shade but would have liked it better if it dried a bit faster.  It also looks good smudged a bit with a wash of a brown eyeshadow over it.  Love that it comes with a really useful brush.  So yes, I liked it, and it is less expensive than the MAC versions, so for anyone looking for an alternative, this would be a great pick.

Safe for sensitive eyes and for those using contact lenses.  Opthalmologist tested.

Cost:  About $10
