Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base

Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base - Review

Ingenious multi-tasking fluid 'primes' skin perfectly for makeup, while adding subtle contours and radiance to the face. A unique blend of powders reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines for smooth, even, flawless finish."

I bought Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base a while back to use as a primer.  I have read different reviews - just about every person using it differently with mixed results - so I really won't call this a review - more like my experience with the product.

This is a white liquid - like a really thin lotion - that comes packaged in a wide-mouthed, heavy glass bottle with a screw-on lid.  It has pleasant powdery-rose fragrance to it that is similar to some of Chanel's skincare lines (Hydramax gels, I think) and is something I am used to with Chanel products, but it might be an issue for anyone who prefers unscented products.

Chanel recommends shaking the bottle (specifically, to turn it upside down and straighten it a couple of times) to mix the product up before use.

How I use Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base:   More than using it as a base under any foundation, I love using this INSTEAD of a foundation, kind of like how a tinted moisturizer would be used.  This reduces any redness I might have on my face and gives a soft, healthy look to the skin.  The most important thing about this is to start with less - just a few dots over the face is quite sufficient.  If using under a foundation, it works best with a non-matte foundation - providing a more even skin tone so you need lesser foundation.  However, when I tried a matte powder foundation over this, it looked really bad - made my face look lifeless and muddy :-|

What I get is some evenness to the skin tone and a soft glow.  I have shown this on my hand to give a better idea:

  • Gives a healthy glow to the skin - not a shimmer but more like a sheen.  It is very subtle, and the difference might not really be very obvious.  I would describe it as a well-rested, happy skin look :D
  • It gives a bit of a matte effect, and if it has any makeup-prolonging properties, it would be only because of this.  Other than that, I did not find it to be of much use with keeping makeup on any longer than it would normally stay anyway.
  • Easy to go overboard with.  It takes some practice to figure out how much of the product to use.  Apply more, and it can go from healthy sheen to whitish cast.
  • Can be used in the undereye area to brighten it up a bit or only on the cheekbones or any other area that you would want to highlight - I don't use it this way.
Now on to the packaging - this is the biggest flaw in this product.  As I said earlier, it comes packaged in a wide-mouthed bottle, and this gets very messy around the mouth and the lid - even if I am careful with tipping the product on to my hand.  Chanel provides a spatula to use with this product, but I lost it ages back.  Anyway, the product gets everywhere since you have to shake the bottle to mix it before using (and/or if you don't leave the bottle standing upright at all times).

A lot of product wastage apart from the obvious mess.

I love Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base because of the natural-looking glow it gives whether used alone or under a non-matte foundation.  My preference is for sheer coverage, and I don't have a problem with my not-so-perfect skin being seen.  Using this as a base, all my blemishes are still there, but somehow they seem softer and less "eye catching."  If you are in the market for a silicone-free primer/base, you could give this a try, but I have read so many different reactions to this product, I would never recommend this to anyone without trying it in store first (or a sample if available).

Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer Illuminating Base (available here) - Cost:  $45

Need very little of the product, and a bottle would probably last a lifetime.

  2. Ya..but you know the SA, she didn't put it properly for me. She applied it like she would apply foundation - like so much. Actually, you need to apply only as much as you would of your lotion/cream (maybe little lesser). You tell her you will apply it yourself :D
