Recourbe Cils De Chanel - Precision Eyelash Curler

Recourbe Cils De Chanel is a limited-edition eyelash curler that came out in the US along with the Sophisticated Eye Collection this year.

What Chanel says:  Delivering beautiful lift and intense curves, the arc shape fits perfectly against the eyelid, gently and safely sculpting every single lash for optimal natural curl. Includes two silicone refill pads.

This is my first time ordering from Chanel online, and I definitely am missing the friendly chatter with my favorite Chanel SA back in Bangalore.  It took me about a week to get the product, and it comes packaged in a drawstring pouch - at least that's how I got mine.

The curler, like all online orders from Chanel, comes packaged in a drawstring pouch.

On to the curler itself, this is my first/only eyelash curler, so this would be more of a description rather than a review since I don't have much to compare to.  The curler is all black except for a white CHANEL printed on it.  The package also includes 2 refill pads - so you get a total of 3 (that's including the one on the curler itself).  The curler itself comes nestled in a paper box to hold it safely, and while I am storing it the same way currently, I don't know how long I will continue to use it before I tear it.

The handles of this curler are really slim and rounded, and while they look flimsy, they don't really feel that way when held and actually keep the curler quite light.  This curler has a nice C-shape to the part that actually fits the eye and contours perfectly to the shape of my eyes.  The rubber pad is perfectly rounded to give a natural looking curl to the lashes.

What makes the Chanel eyelash curler really good is it meets all the requirements of any good curler - a rounded rubber pad that provides a natural-looking curl and the perfect contour that ensures that all/most of my eyelashes fit in the curler without pinching my eyelids.

However, that said, there are some things to be kept in mind in case you are planning to shell out some money and buy yourself one of these:
  • Cost:  Yes, it is Chanel and one expects it to be expensive, but at $34.00 this curler costs about twice as much as Shu Umera or Shiseido (and some other equally good brands) which retail for about $19.00.   You can pick any of these curlers, they are all equally good - and the cost is the only thing that sets this apart.  Personally, I am a Chanel nut (in case someone missed that) and I waited and waited for this to be released to buy it, but in my limited experience, I think this is just as good as the best eyelash curlers in the market, and which one you want to pick is all up to you :)
  • Limited Edition:  Unlike makeup, tools like lash curlers don't come with expiry dates.  However, the rubber pads loose their elasticity and/or might break, and once you run out of the 3 rubber pads provided, there aren't any more available to buy.  Chanel does not sell refills separately currently.  I am sure some other refill can be fit into this, but that is just a compromise and considering this is so expensive, it is definitely something to keep in mind.
  • Colour:  It's black - and my lashes are black - so it does get a little difficult to see where my lashes are.  This doesn't mean I will hurt my eyelids, but since I am not very familiar with using this, I find that sometimes I clamp the curler with none of my lashes inside it at all :D :D
These are before and after photos with using this eyelash curler:

My lashes aren't very orderly in their arrangement, so I couldn't get a proper photo
but this should give an idea...I think :P

How to Use an Eyelash Curler - I am still learning how to curl my lashes perfectly, but here are some tips I read and try to follow to get it to look more natural:

  • Don't press down too hard/clamp the curler too tightly while trying to curl the lashes.  Doing that would give a sharp bend to the lashes and what we need to get is a natural sweeping curve.
  • Depending on how your natural lashes stand - if they are the kinds that poke straight out, for instance - you can do a step by step curl.  Hold the curler near the base of the lashes and do a gentle clamp.  Then, move the curler a little more towards the center and then another gentle curl.  This again, ensures that you get a more gradual curve to the lashes.
  • I have read hints on heating the curler/lashes - not tried any of that.
  • I think it's better to curl lashes before applying mascara - one reason being that mascara tends to make the lashes more prone to breakage while trying to curl them and the reason would be that it would make the rubber pad dirty.  This is just my opinion; I guess people follow what works for them :D
So that was my story about my first ever eyelash curler (and thank you, Mr. Rads, for getting it for me) :D :D   Eyelash curlers scare me a bit, but I do find that it makes my eyes look more awake when the lashes aren't so droopy.  For all those who are still on the other side of the fence, it's very easy NOT to pinch your eyelids - so go out and get one of these scary looking devices and see the difference!

  12. Such a gorgeous eye lash curler. They say it is better than the Shu Uemura one as the shape of the eye lash curler is really wide and catches the last of the lashes. I am going to chuck the Shiseido one for this when I go to Chanel next time. They have some really awesome stuff..!!

  13. Hii Neeraj..I don't know if it's better than the one Shiseido makes - only tried that one in store - I just listed all the faults that I could find, but otherwise, it gives such a natural curl and so easily I love love it :D Do give it a try at the Chanel counter and am sure you would be able to give a better opinion as far as comparisons go.
