I got this sampler/tester pack of Shiseido lipsticks - 4 Shimmering Rouge (Rouge Eblouissant) lipsticks and 2 Perfect Rouge (Rouge Parfait) lipsticks. I found the tiny blister-packed lipsticks so cute, I just had to share them here :) :)

Bath and Body Works Signature Collection - Coconut Pineapple Body Lotion (Review)

Our Signature Collection Coconuts Body Lotion, fortified with powerful ingredients like super conditioning Shea Butter, fast absorbing Jojoba Oil and protective Vitamin E, hydrates skin with moisture that lasts all day. Our non-greasy formula absorbs quickly and completely to leave skin feeling incredibly soft, smooth and nourished, making it the perfect daily moisturizer.

I picked this up about a month back when I saw them on sale for $1.  Not an offer I could resist!  This is a creamy white lotion that is easy to spread and gets absorbed quite fast.  My skin stayed moisturized about 8-10 hours, which for me is good enough.  I won't use this for my hands or feet, though, as I prefer heavier creams for that.

I love the press-cap kind of design for dispensing the lotion.  I prefer these kinds to the flip-open caps (especially prefer them to caps that are too tight).  The one fault I do find with this lotion, though, is the smell.  It's a bit too strong, though I prefer this to the Coconut-Passionfruit lotion which I found to be stronger.  The smell does wear off after a while, but I would probably go with some other range (Warm Vanilla/Sweet Pea - yes I remember the recommendations) from Bath and Body Works next time.  I do have the Twilight Woods Body Butter to finish off first, though :D

A Colourful Diet

Not really a person who is disciplined enough to follow very many healthy-eating habits, there are a few that are really easy enough even for someone like me to pick up.  One of them is to include bright colourful vegetables and fruits in the diet.  I like this rule just because it makes the plate look so much more attractive, but it also is the easiest method to load up on antioxidants.  Here's a breakdown of some interesting facts I found online.

tomato lycopene health benefits colourful diet

Reds - Tomato:   The bright red colour in tomatoes comes from a carotene pigment lycopene.  Benefits:  Protects against cancer.  Improves skin protection towards UV rays.  Tomatoes cooked in oil are the best way to get a good dose of this nutrient (I knew there had to be something more than just taste to the onion-tomato bhuna masala :P :P).  Also present in red carrots, papaya, water melon, red peppers.

broccoli carrot green leafy vegetables nutrition recipes healthy food diet
Orange/Yellow - Carrot:  The bright orange colour in carrots come from the high concentration of beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the human body.   Benefits:  On its own as well as with being a rich source of vitamin A, betacarotenes act to protect the body against free radical damage (act as antioxidants).  As is the case with tomatoes, the amount of nutrient absorbed by the body increases when the carrots are steamed or stir-fried.  Other sources of beta-carotene:  Pumpkins, sweet potato, yellow bell peppers.

Mangoes, my favorite fruit for the summer, are another great source of carotenoids, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and polyphenols.  Slice and eat, whip up a lassi, or cook them up in a tangy yogurt sauce - yummy goodness every way :D

broccoli carrot green leafy vegetables nutrition recipes healthy food diet

Green - Broccoli, any green leafy vegetable like spinach, etc.  Most green veggies seem to be filled to the brim with nutrients.  Broccoli, for instance, is a rich source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and has anticancer properties.  For cooking, steaming or microwaving is a better option than boiling (to preserve maximum nutrition).

spinach leafy green vegetables healthy benefits diet iron vitamin c absorb

Green leafy vegetables like spinach are rich sources of iron, but most vegetable sources of iron (non-heme iron) are difficult to absorb by the body.  The presence of vitamin C helps increase this absorption (maybe a dash of lime/lemon juice).

Another way of going green is with avacados - rich source of dietary fiber and vitamin E.   A bowl
of gauacomole and some crisp khakras, you cannot get more lazy healthy eating than that!
Berries and Cherries - I know those are fruits, not really colours, but I don't know how else to describe the colours ranging from puplish black to bright cherry reds.

cherries berries polyphenols health benefits diet nutrition colourful foodsBerries (the fruits) and grapes are generally rich sources of polyphenols which are the pigments that give them their bright colours.  Benefits:  Heart healthy, antioxidants, and protect against cancer.  Wash them and eat them - easiest way to get a dose of antiaging skincare :D

pomegranate seeds healthy benefits nutrition food colourful diet
Not a berry or a cherry, pomegranate is another bright coloured
fruit that is a rich source of vitamin B5 and polyphenols.

These are some of the ways I add colour and some good nutrition to my otherwise pointless diet.  What about you...what are you favorite diet colours?

Lush Dark Angels Facial Cleanser Scrub

Dark Angels Cleansing Face Scrub for Oily Skin with charcoal, sandalwood, black sugar, and rhassoul mud.

Dark and tough, this one doesn't mess about. It's a black, squidgy scrub made with charcoal to absorb oils and exfoliate your skin. Nutritious avocado oil softens, glycerine keeps the moisture in, and black sugar scrubs away.

Lush Dark Angels Facial Cleanser Scrub
Lush Dark Angels Facial Cleanser/Scrub

This Lush Dark Angels cleanser/face scrub is my favorite for the summers.  It gets the scrubbing power from sugar granules and powdered charcoal and Rhassoul mud soaking up all the excess oils.  If you have oily skin, then this is the scrub for you!  It has avacado oil and glycerine to avoid excessive drying, but I still would not recommend it for those with dry skin.

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick: My Mahogany (255)

Maybellline Color Sensational range of lipsticks claim crisper colours from pure pigments and creamier feel from nourishing honey nectar.

maybelline color sensational lipsticks reviews swatch fotd my mahogany 255

Colour:   To me, this seems like a a peachy-brown lipstick.
Texture:   Creamy, smooth.  Not too glossy but definitely not matte.   No frost/shimmer.

Swatch:  The colour is, as I said, a peachy brown, but it does seem to have a hint of pink in it somewhere (or so it seems to me).  It is a teeny bit darker than what it looks like in the swatch.

maybelline color sensational lipsticks reviews swatch fotd my mahogany 255

On me, the colour looks pretty light.  The lipstick manages to do a decent job of covering up my natural lip pigmentation.  I am undecided if the colour tends to make me look dull or not.  I liked that it was a light warm colour, and it seems to me like something I could use a lot in the summers.  I tried to do a darker eye makeup to go with it.  The lipstick lasted a good while too, about 3-4 hours and faded away after lunch and coffee.

maybelline color sensational lipsticks reviews swatch fotd my mahogany 255
I think it would go better with a darker outfit - like maybe a
black/dark blue kinds.  I was too lazy to iron it :P  Oh, and
hair tied up is a better idea.
The only problem I have is it tends to settle into the lines on my lips.  It didn't dry out my lips at all, though, and if you take the time to ensure your lips are smooth (a light scrub with a toothbrush would do), this shouldn't be too much of a problem.  I could detect a faint toffee smell to the lipstick, but only because I specifically checked for it after reading reviews regarding this.  To me, this seems hardly an issue, and the smell wasn't even obvious.  If you are sensitive to smells though, this might be worth checking before buying.

Overall, I quite liked this lipstick.  It was an inexpensive buy from a drugstore and I see myself using this quite a bit during the summers.  A bit more darker than what I am, and this might seem too light, but layering a gloss over this would be one way to make it work.  Also, it would look much better on people with clear skin and/or nonexistent dark circles, but I decided to ignore that criteria :P

Weekend Shopping: Maybelline and Revlon

It's not that much of a shopping, really - just two things I picked up while at CVS.

My Mahagony seems to be a favorite from the Maybelline Color Sensational range of lipsticks, so I picked that up.  I also bought a lipgloss from Revlon - ColorStay Glacis Mineral - Continuous Coral.  It's a bright pink-coral colour, and I usually don't pick up such bright colours, but I thought a gloss is quite safe to try since the colour would be sheered down quite a bit.

So that was my weekend shopping - from last weekend, actually :D  What about you..any shopping sprees planned for the weekend?

Burts Bees Replienishing Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil

Bring your lips back to beautiful. This replenishing and hydrating natural lip balm is infused with the antioxidant goodness of pomegranate oil. It replenishes moisture to reveal smooth, healthy lips, while it coats them with a hint of color for an even-toned appearance.

I got this as a replacement for the Burts Bees Mango Lip balm that remains inaccessible.   I am loving this fruit-berry flavored/smelling lip balm, and it would leave a slight tint on the lips too, but my lips are just too pigmented and dark for any tint to show through.

Lush Pied De Pepper Foot Lotion

Lush Pied De Pepper Foot Lotion - spicy cream to relieve foot pain and soothe sore feet after exercise.

lush pied de pepper foot lotion cream moisturizer reviews ingredients

I bought Lush Pied de Pepper foot lotion a while back, in time for winter, because I remember reading somewhere that this warms up your feet.  Pied de Pepper is excellent in cold weather for people who have cold extremities and like to warm their feet up on yours.  They were talking about me!  I just HAD to pick this up.

How to Use the Pied de Pepper foot lotion:  Smooth over clean dry feet. For extra moisturizing, apply extra lotion to feet, wrap in plastic and keep on for an hour. Or, try applying at night and covering with clean cotton socks.

lush pied de pepper foot lotion cream moisturizer reviews ingredients

  • The foot lotion is a very thick brown-pink product.  I have read reviews mentioning that this stains skin and/or bedsheets.  I haven't had any such problems.
  • I was expecting this to warm my feet up, slather this on and have warm feet forever.  Nope.  That does not happen.  What the Pied de Pepper foot lotion does do is give a bit of a tingling sensation to the skin, probably because of the spices, and this might seem to be a bit warming for some, but not so much for me.
  • There is a strong sharp medicinal smell to the lotion that reminds me of Iodex or Vicks and is very similar to the Lush Wicci massage bar.  This isn't a smell I particularly like.  The sharp spicy smell, though, might be great for people who are using this in the summers as it will definitely keep off foot odor.

I find this a very light lotion - too light for my needs.  Coupled with the fact that it didn't provide the warming sensation that I had perhaps falsely expected, this is definitely not my favorite foot lotions.  It does moisturize my feet, but I need to reapply in about 8 hours - my feet would look like they hadn't been moisturized at all by then.

It's not all bad, though.  While I find this lacking in its moisturizing abilities, I do feel the lotion works best for tired feet. Take the time to soak your feet in some warm water, scrub them, and slather on this lotion.  Massage and slip on comfortable cotton socks.  Your feet will thank you.

Lush Pied de Pepper Foot Lotion Ingredients:

lush pied de pepper foot lotion cream moisturizer reviews ingredients
Vanilla Pod Decoction, Olive Oil, Stearic Acid, Fair Trade Cocoa Butter, Triethanolamine, Clove Bud Oil,
Cetearyl Alcohol, Cinnamon Leaf Oil, Ginger Oil. Lemon Oil, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Cinnamal, Citral, Eugenol,
Geraniol, Isoeugenol, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, Linalool, Perfume, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.
Overall, I think the Lush Pied de Pepper foot lotion is best for days when I have been up on your feet all day.  The tingling spicy lotion does a good job of relaxing the feet, especially with some cotton socks slipped on.  I would not recommend this lotion, though, if you are looking for some heavy duty moisturizer.  You would just end up using a lot of product, and Lush doesn't come cheap :)

Cost:  Rs. 860/100 g ($15.95)

As with most Lush products that come in black tubs, return 5 black tubs to get 75 g of fresh face mask of your choice.

Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion (Review)

Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion - with natural Colloidal Oatmeal blended with rich emollients this fast-absorbing formula helps prevent and protect dry skin, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and naturally healthy looking. It's fragrance free, non-greasy, noncomedogenic and gentle enough for everyday use - good for sensitive skin.

I have heard loads about Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion and its skin-soothing properties, and being plagued with dry skin (only my face remains miraculously oily), I got myself a bottle of this soon as I saw it.  I got the bottle with the flip-open cap, but you can also get a bottle with a pump for dispensing the lotion.

My Experience with the Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion

The lotion is quite thick but very easy to spread.  It says unfragranced, but if you hold your hand really close to your nose, you could pick up a very faint plasticky smell.  I was quite skeptical about how effective this lotion would when I read the ingredient list and saw "dimethicone" listed as it's primary ingredient.  My past experiences with lotions containing similar ingredients have not been that great - a slippery smooth feeling on the skin and absolutely no moisture added to the skin.  With the Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion, though, my experience was different.

skincare makeup beauty blog aveeno daily moisturizing lotion active naturals reviews ingredients

This easy-to-spread lotion gets absorbed really fast without the dreadful slippery feeling.  My skin stayed moisturized for about 12 hours, which I think is quite decent performance for such a light lotion.  That said, I don't think I would still repurchase because I prefer natural ingredients in my skincare unless there is such an amazing advantage to the synthetic alternative.  I prefer ingredients like cocoa/shea butter and/or natural oils as opposed to something that just sits as an inert layer on the skin thus providing the "skin protection."  Now, I accept my research might not be very extensive, and so if there is some other benefit of dimethicone, do let me know so I can update the post.

Final thoughts on the Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion:

I might not repurchase this product, but that does not mean this will  not work for you, and no I am not trying to sweeten the review.  Dimethicone works as a skin protecting barrier, reinforcing skin that might be otherwise more fragile, which is why I suspect it is quite a favorite among those with skin problems such as eczema.  Also, this is a very light lotion and would be perfect for those staying the areas with high humidity and/or hotter climate.  If you feel you fit into any of these categories, do give this inexpensive much-loved lotion a try, and who knows, it might just be the one for you :)

Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion Cost:  About $10.00/532 mL (the bottle I have is a much smaller travel-size one)

YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils - Noir Radical

With one sweep of the wand, this lush mascara combines the captivating volume and false lash effect of Faux Cils Luxurious Mascara with our deepest black color ever. Carefully selected mineral pigments coat lashes from root to tip with dramatically dark color that’s simply unmatched, while the Triple Film-Complex specially coats each lash for added intensity, curve, and long-lasting wear. The result: a dangerously glamorous lash look that lasts.

I bought this mascara after I tried and loved it at a YSL makeover.  As with all YSL products, there is a lot of gold in the packaging, and it took some time getting used to the all-gold tube that this mascara comes in.

ysl mascara false lash effect volumizing faux cils effet noir radical review eotd swatch

The mascara is not waterproof, but it is water-resistant, and as the makeup artist explained to it to me, it won't just run into black rivers if you get a few drops of water on you but washes off easily enough with regular water and soap or with any makeup remover, which is perfect for me because I don't really like waterproof mascaras/makeup and don't have any requirement for it either.

ysl mascara false lash effect volumizing faux cils effet noir radical review eotd swatch
The brush has lots of short bristles and while it helps pick up a lot of product - it is a volumizing mascara - it deposits just the right amount of product on the lashes and doesn't leave any clumps.   The mascara is quite black, and I am assuming the way it works is it is thicker and packs a lot more pigment in it than the regular black ones.

ysl mascara false lash effect volumizing faux cils effet noir radical review eotd swatch

I swatched this alongside a Chanel black for comparison and while they look quite similar on the swatch, the YSL mascara is thicker.  Also, I do notice a difference when I wipe off my makeup and the cotton squares pick up a whole lot of black.

Top swatch - Chanel Inimitable mascara in Black
Lower swatch - YSL Faux Cils mascara in Noir Radical

This doesn't give a lot of curl to the lashes, and you would need to use a curler before using the mascara, but I haven't got one with me, so it's just nekkid lashes and lashes with mascara on.  The lighting is a little different in the two photos, but other than that it's all same.

Tip from the YSL makeup artist:  Wriggle the mascara wand into the base of your lashes depositing the maximum colour at the roots. This gives a dark base to the lashes.

fabulous photography skills making them look that way :|

This is my favorite among all the mascaras I have tried so far.  It makes me look awake, and I love the intense black colour that it gives.  It would be some time before I would want to try some other brand/type of mascara, and I suspect when I do change it will only be because I got tired of using this.

The one thing that I found peculiar about this product is that it is fragranced.  I have never used a mascara that has a fragrance to it, or at least not one that is this obvious, but I don't have a problem with it.  However, if you are sensitive to fragrances in your makeup, I suggest you do a sniff test before buying.  It is a pleasant smell, but fragrances are a bit of a personal choice, aren't they?

Green Garbanzo Beans and Potato Curry

Green chickpeas that are meant to be shelled like fresh green peas aren't something I am familiar with at all, so when I found them at the store this weekend, I picked up some to try.

hara chana recipes food garbanzo chickpeas beans tomato onion sauce gravy Indian curry

I have no clue how people actually cook these, but I made a very simple onion-tomato sauce and added boiled chickpeas and potato to it.  Not bad at all, but if any of you know any other way of cooking this, do share :)

Here's the recipe I followed:  Boil the chickpeas in slightly salted water till they are cooked through.  Drain and set aside.  I had about 1 large cup of shelled chickpeasAlso need 1 large potato, boiled, chopped roughly into cubes.

Saute 1 onion, finely chopped, until pink and translucent.  Add ginger-garlic paste (about 1 tsp).  Add 2 tomatoes roughly chopped and finely chopped cilantro (corriander leaves) and fry this mixture till the oil starts to separate from the sides.

Add 1/4 tsp haldi/turmeric powder, 3/4 tsp red chili powder, 1/2 tsp corriander powder, and 1/2 tsp garam masala powder.  Fry on low heat for about a minute.  Add boiled chickpeas and potato cubes.

Add salt to taste, about 1/2 cup water, let the gravy simmer until the sauce thickens and coat the pieces.  Serve hot with phulkas and a small bowl of yogurt.  Yum.

L'Oreal Hip Eyeshadow Duos - Shady and Dashing

L'Oreal HIP eyeshadow duos are available in a variety of shades/finishes (check here and here) - I picked up these two shades since I don't really have many matte shades.  True to their name, the shadows are highly pigmented and stay on without creasing.  Shady is a lighter and darker brown while Dashing is a pale pink and black combination.

loreal hip eyeshadow duo review swatch eotd shady dashing

The packaging consists of two halves.  One side containing the eyeshadow duos and the lower compartment containing a sponge applicator.  I have never bothered with using it, but it's there and makes a racket rattling inside the compartment but other than that it does seem quite useless.

loreal hip eyeshadow duo review swatch eotd shady dashing

Swatches:  I couldn't get the lighter colours to show up that well on my skin since they are quite similar to my skin colour, but the shadows are quite pigmented and what you see in the pan is the exact colour that you get.

loreal hip eyeshadow duo review swatch eotd shady dashing

I used the light brown colour all over my lid, the brown towards the outer corner, and the black to line the lower lashline and into the upper lashline.  A bit of black in the outer corner too.  The lighter pink shade I used under my brow.

loreal hip eyeshadow duo review swatch eotd shady dashing
The Shady duo is a good all-over lid colour for me.  It matches my skin colour perfectly - the lighter shade almost invisible on my lid.  For lighter-skinned people, this would be a nice neutral everyday option.  The Dashing duo has a good matte black eyeshadow and a lighter pink that would work well as a highlighting shade.
