Queen Helene Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Lotion

Queen Helene Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Lotion - a light moisturizer that blends cocoa butter and lanolin. Recommended for dry skin, it claims to prevent wrinkles and stretchmarks and soothe sun or wind damage.

Queen Helene Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Lotion Dry Skin Moisturizer Reviews Ingredients

I have read a lot of rave reviews for the Queen Helene Mint Julepe mask, but I have never managed to find it during any of my trips to CVS.   What I did find was the Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Lotion, and since it was the same brand I picked up a smaller size tube to try out.

Queen Helene Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Lotion Dry Skin Moisturizer Reviews Ingredients

This lotion claims to be a light weight blend of cocoa butter and lanolin in a nongreasy base and comes packaged in a simple and spill-proof tube.  I never go by what is written on packages and prefer to go through the ingredients lists and make my own decision, and a quick peek at the list showed mineral oil listed on the top, right after water, with shea butter and lanolin lower down in the list.  I don't mind the mineral oil so much, especially since I use this as a body lotion and not on my face, but it does make the product quite greasy.

My Experience with the Queen Helene Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Lotion:

Queen Helene Cocoa Butter Hand and Body Lotion Dry Skin Moisturizer Reviews Ingredients
  • The moisturizer seems light and spreads easily but takes a long time getting absorbed.  The moisturizing effect lasts about 6-7 hours.
  • Quite contrary to what the packaging claims, I found this to be a very greasy lotion.  I don't have a problem with the greasiness, in fact quite prefer that, as long as it gets absorbed reasonably fast.  This lotion, though, takes some time getting absorbed, and I end up leaving an oily prints on whatever I touch if I don't wait.
  • I find it too greasy to be used as a facial moisturizer at least for my kind of skin.
  • The smell is a mix of plastic and coconut - a combination that I absolutely hate.
This is an inexpensive drugstore brand, and a small tube would last a long while.  This would be a perfect product for anyone who uses up a lot of moisturizer - I keep the tube in the kitchen since my hands get quite dry with the dish washing soap.  Because it is so greasy, I like to use it for my feet, right before I slip on some cotton socks so they stay warm and moisturized.  I do wish it had a milder smell or was just unscented.

Bath and Body Works Body Lotion: Apple Blossom and Citrus

Apple Blossom and Citrus Body Lotion from Bath Body Works Signature Collection - a fresh burst of zesty citrus and juicy apple fortified with Shea Butter, fast absorbing Jojoba Oil and protective Vitamin E.

Bath and Body Works Signature Collection Apple Blossom and Citrus Body Lotion Reviews Ingredients Moisturizer

Bath and Body Works has what seems to me like a million products, whether you are looking for a pampering bath or just regular skincare.  A lot of their products come in smaller sizes too which means I end up picking up bottle or two..or three..every time I go anywhere near their store.   The Apple Blossom and Citrus Body Lotion is just one such purchase.

Bath and Body Works Signature Collection Apple Blossom and Citrus Body Lotion Reviews Ingredients Moisturizer

This creamy white lotion comes in the usual Bath and Body Works travel-friendly packaging - a flip-open cap that makes it easy to get the lotion out and only when you need it.  No accidental spills in the bag!  It has the zesty, fruity sweet smell that I am beginning to feel is common to BBW products and it stays on the skin for a long time.  The moisturizing power is quite reasonable for a lotion, lasting about 7 to 8 hours, and it absorbs easily enough without leaving any greasy film.

If you are on the lookout for a light moisturizer or a new body lotion to carry around in your bag, do give this a try the next time you are at the store.

Cost:  $10.50/237 mL and $5 for the smaller travel size bottle (59 mL).

ELF Studio Powder Brush

I have read so many good reviews on ELF makeup, especially their brushes, and a trip to Target invariably finds me scanning the shelves for something interesting to try out.  I finally made up my mind and picked up the powder brush from the ELF Studio line.

ELF Studio Makeup Brushes Powder
ELF Studio Makeup Brushes Powder

The brush comes packaged in a transparent plastic pouch that can be used to store it in.  The handle is a classy matte black with a glossy black ferrule portion.  It's a flat-top brush with synthetic, black bristles.

Usage Instructions:

My experience with this brush:  This is one of the most inexpensive brushes I have tried, and for this price, this is probably a good deal.  If, however, you are not really looking at it from a budget point of view, here's what I feel:
  • It looks classy and is reasonably soft - at least not really scratchy.  However, I have tried softer brushes from drugstore brands (Ecotools).
  • The brush I got shed quite a few bristles in the beginning.  While it doesn't shed at the same alarming rate now, I do find a stray bristle poking out every now and then (can actually see one in the second photo).
  • ELF calls this a powder brush, but I use this mainly for buffing/blending.  I haven't found it an efficient powder brush and/or a foundation brush.

Wheatgrass: Tried and Tasted?

Wheatgrass - grass that grows from sprouting wheatberries - is quite common at juice bars and health food outlets.  Health benefit claims include general detox, cancer prevention, though apparently not proven substantially enough by scientific studies.  While I don't mind the antioxidant boost, I am wondering about the taste.  If you have tried wheatgrass juice/powder, would love your input :)

TBS Cassis Rose Perfume

In the language of flowers, a pink rose means perfect happiness. And our vivacious, playful Cassis Rose fragrance just radiates bliss. Romantic, flirtatious and as feminine as a bed strewn with petals, it’s 100% woman. Just like you.

Top notes:  Raspberry and blackcurrant
Middle notes:  Rose, freesia and violet
Base notes:  Musk, sandalwood and cedarwood

TBS Bodyshop Cassis Rose Womens Perfume Fragrance Eau De Toilette Reviews Ingredients makeup beauty skincare blog

This was a gift from my sister, and I have the EDT version of this fragrance.  Lacking the creative writing genius that Bodyshop has, I would just describe this as "smells just like a rose."  If you have ever smelled fresh roses in the early morning air, that would be the smell to associate TBS Cassis Rose with - except, this is a bit stronger.  The initial notes do seem a bit sweet but get a bit more rounded with the muskiness that comes on as the fragrance dies down.  The predominant note, though, for me is definitely the rose.

I need to use a very light hand with this perfume, and the little that I spray on lasts forever.  While I don't really like strong perfumes, I love using this on days when I know I am going to be out all day, especially in a hot, Indian climate.  I can definitely count on coming back home smelling like a bunch of roses :D

Ingredients:  Alcohol Denat. (Solvent/Diluent), Aqua (Water) (Solvent/Diluent), Parfum (Fragrance), Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Fragrance Ingredient), Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde (Fragrance Ingredient), Hexyl Cinnamal (Fragrance Ingredient), Alpha-Iso

If you don't mind floral, stronger fragrances and/or are on the lookout for a rose-smelling, long-lasting perfume that won't kill your wallet, this would be a good buy.  I do think this is a discontinued item, though!

Love Your Hair? Show It You Care!

"Stereotyping" is sometimes frowned upon, but being born in the coconutty state of Kerala where just about everyone has amazing skin and lovely long tresses, I won't have any qualms fitting into the stereotype.  Reality, though, is quite another story.  My hair is coarse, dry, frizzes up at the slightest excuse, and generally behaves like it has a mind of it's own.  It has been a constant battle between me and my hair, and of course, hair always wins.  Older and wiser now, I have made peace with my hair and learned to love it the way it is, and miraculously, my hair seems to be quite tolerant of me too!

The moral of the story:  Beautiful hair is not defined as long, thick, or straight - it's defined as "healthy," and as the photo shows, I have decied to eat my way to happy hair.

Here's my easy (and perhaps a bit cheesy) checklist:

1.  The fishy idea:   There's a reason why people staying in coastal areas have the kind of skin and hair they have.  It's all that fish they feast on.  It's iron, high-quality protein, B12, and omega-3 acids in one superhealthy package.  Nice idea, but I am a vegetarian who is willing to do a little cheating, and I use fish oil capsules.

haircare healthy nutrition diet indian black south dry vitamins fall prevention reduce

For the honest vegetarian/vegan, there's flaxseed - just sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons of ground flaxseed over your salad or yogurt or mix it in the smoothie.

2.  Go Green...and yellow and orange:  Yes, mom was right about the spinach (and various other things too), and while Popeye might not be the best example to prove my point here, green and colorful vegetables and fruits definitely are essential for healthy hair and skin.

haircare healthy nutrition diet indian black south dry vitamins fall prevention reduce
A rich source of vitamin A, C, iron, and calcium.
3.  Bad hair days driving you nuts?  Try a handful of nuts a day - almond, cashews, walnuts - whatever you pick, try the dry roasted options over the admittedly tastier oil-roasted versions.  It's healthy hair without having to worry about a growing waist!

haircare healthy nutrition diet indian black south dry vitamins fall prevention reduce
A rich source of omega-3 (that's vegan friendly too) and zinc that helps
keep hair shiny and reduces hair fall too.
4.  Dear Dairy:  My hair loves you!

haircare healthy nutrition diet indian black south dry vitamins fall prevention reduce
Dairy products like yogurt, cheese, milk, etc., are a rich source of calcium as well as
high-quality proteins like whey and casein.  Throw in some fresh fruits and some low-fat
yogurt into a blender to make yourself some yummy smoothie - guilt-free love!
5.  Bean there..done that:  Pulses and beans are quite common in most Indian kitchens and are slowly but steadily making their presence felt on market shelves across the world.  These little things provide an excellent source of protein while maintaining a low GI (technical speak for doesn't cause blood sugar spikes) - and you don't need to be a vegetarian and/or diabetic to enjoy them.

haircare healthy nutrition diet indian black south dry vitamins fall prevention reduce
Rich in iron, zinc, biotin, and a rich source of protein.  Make sure you finish the dish with
a dash of lime or lemon juice to help better absorb the iron.
Five is a good number, so I end my list here.  Just remember the key nutrients to look for:  Omega-3 fatty acids (to add a shine to your hair), zinc (to reduce hair fall), iron, and vitamins for stronger, healthier hair that withstands breakage.  Now go on and eat something - you hair will love you!

Chanel Joues Contraste Rouge Powder Blush

Chanel Joues Contraste Rouge Powder Blush - bestselling, ultra-wearable powder blush highlights cheeks with a subtle new shade of red, accentuated with traces of gold and pearlized shimmer. Limited Edition.

The limited edition shade of Chanel Joues Contraste blush - Rouge - was released a while back as part of the Byzance collection from Chanel. A very limited release, I could only find this online - a first for me, buying without swatching.

The Chanel Joues Contraste Rouge Powder Blush comes packaged in the usual velvet pouch, and a small brush is provided with it.  There are some subtle differences in the packaging of this product, though, when compared to other Joues Contraste blushes.  It's almost as if the colour is so exclusive it has to be hidden in every possible way - I know it sounds a little too dramatic, but I couldn't think of any logical explanation :P :P  The back of the package does not show the colour - just a white dot - and the protective plastic covering the blush inside is black and definitely not see-through.

chanel byzance fall 2011 collection joues contraste blush powder rouge reviews ingredients fotd makeup looks swatches

Once I got past all these oddities, though, I definitely did discover a treasure.  The Chanel Joues Contraste Rouge Powder Blush is is the most pigmented Chanel blush I have seen - a deep dark reddish pink with very elegant pearlized shimmer woven throughout.  I use the word "shimmer" only because I don't know the proper word for it - on the skin, it just provides a sheen, like a very fine highlighter, and I can barely ever see the shimmer particles.  This, of course, is a common feature with all JCs.

chanel byzance fall 2011 collection joues contraste blush powder rouge reviews ingredients fotd makeup looks swatches

I am darker skinned, and even on me, the colour is best used sparingly.  A light application gives the flushed look that I would normally get when I go out in the winters.  Perhaps because this is so pigmented, and I am not very great at blending/makeup to start with, I found this blush bit difficult to get right.  I apply the blush very sparingly with the brush provided and use a clean brush to blend this in.  I find this method gives me the most natural (and nonclowny) application, especially since I don't have the perfect skin that is almost essential to carry off reds.  This is how the Chanel Joues Contrate Rouge Powder Blush looks on me:

Additional products used:  Chanel Perfection Lumiere foundation
Chanel soft touch eyeshadow - Vert Khaki
Rouge Allure Extrait De Gloss - Emoi
Despite the fact that it is a little difficult to work with, especially for a not-so-perfect makeup newbie like me, I really do like this blush a lot.  This will last me a lifetime, and hopefully, my skin and skills would improve with time :D :D

Chanel Joues Contraste Rouge Powder Blush (available here) - Cost:  $43.00.  Also part of the Byzance collection is the golden highlighter blush - Joues Contraste Or (limited edition).

I like to use premoistened facial towelettes to take off my makeup at the end of a long day when I am too tired to bother with a proper makeup remover.  I do a quick wipe and then wash my face.  My latest purchase is from Burt's Bees.  These wipes come in cheery yellow, travel-friendly packaging.

The wipes are generously sized (18 x 20 cm) and have a sharp clean smell to them.  The premoistened wipes make a quick job of cleaning most of the grime and makeup from my face, though eye makeup like eyeliners might take a bit more effort.  Not an issue for me since I hardly ever use waterproof makeup, and it all gets taken care of with a soap-and-water wash.  I do feel a very slight irritation with these wipes, but it's very minimal.  While I feel it's something I should mention in a review, it's not really a concern for me, and I do have very sensitive skin.

Brownie Points:  I don't go looking for cruelty-free/ecofriendly products, but it's nice to know Burt's Bees follows these principles - No animal testing.  No phthalates, parabens, or petrochemicals.

Verdict:  A simple yet effective facial wipe, though if you use a lot of waterproof products this might not be your best choice for makeup removal.

The Body Shop Pink Grapefruit Body Scrub

Revitalize and soften your skin using an invigorating, gel-based scrub with gently exfoliating orange peel and corncob granules.

A citrusy sweet body scrub from TBS, the Pink Grapefruit body scrub is the easiest way to supersmooth skin.  The gel-based scrub has numerous large and fine granules scattered throughout the pale orange-brown base, though, I think it's the finer granules that provide the actual scrubbing power.

tbs the bodyshop pink grapefruit scrub reviews ingredients skincare blog

To use, just scoop out the required amount of scrub and use on wet skin in gentle, round motions.  Wash off easily with water.  I use this scrub about once a week - that's about how much I can work on pampering my skin - and I notice an immediate difference in the skin after using the scrub.  It feels smoother, with a very faint citrusy scent lingering on.  Follow up with a good moisturizer.

Precautions and Ingredients List:

Overall, I find this a great basic scrub.  It is quite efficient at exfoliating the skin and leaving it smooth and soft.  With the numerous sales at TBS, it's easy to stock up on this without breaking the bank.

The Body Shop Rainforest Radiance Shampoo

TBS Rainforest Radiance Shampoo for Colored Hair - Remove dulling residues for prolonged color radiance using a gently cleansing shampoo without silicones, sulphates, parabens or colorants.  With pracaxi oil, bilberry extract, linseed oil and Community Trade sugar.

TBS The Body Shop Rainforest Radiance Shampoo Colored Hair Reviews Ingredients Sulfate Paraben Free

The Rainforest haircare range from TBS has products that contain no parabens, silicones, or colorants - easily biodegradable and uses recycled packaging as much as possible.  I picked up the Rainforest Radiance Shampoo, best for colored hair since it has antioxidant bilberry extracts to protect hair.  Packaged in simple dark-colored bottles with a flip-open cap to dispense the product, this is a clear shampoo (no colorants in this) with a pleasant smell.

My experience with the TBS Rainforest Radiance shampoo

This is a very gentle shampoo, with a very soft lather.  While I have no problem with the lack of much lather (since this is a sulfate-free shampoo), I do feel I need to use more of the product to get the same clean feel that I would get for less product from other regular shampoos.  It might be something to keep in mind for anyone with thicker hair or for anyone who does a deep conditioning oil treatment before the wash.  It leaves my hair clean without making it too dry, but I have definitely seen more moisturizing shampoos than this.  The shampoo does strike a balance between removing dulling residues and not drying out too much.  I follow this up with a conditioner as usual.

TBS Rainforest Radiance Shampoo for Colored Hair - Ingredients:

TBS The Body Shop Rainforest Radiance Shampoo Colored Hair Reviews Ingredients Sulfate Paraben Free

A gentle shampoo that is perfect for colored hair as it definitely does help the color stay on longer.  I prefer moisturizing shampoos, though, since in my list of hair problems dry hair ranks higher than color retention problems, but that's just my preference.

L'Occitane Ultra Rich Lip Balm

With lips that tend to dry out at the slightest excuse, I manage to test out a lot of lip balms.  Generally, I try to use products that contain natural ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, etc., and the latest lip balm I am trying out is the L'Occitane Ultra Rich lip balm.

loccitane ultra riche baume levres lip balm reviews ingredients

The lip balm comes packaged in a tube which makes it easy to apply.  It is a plain cream-coloured lip balm with a sweet vanilla smell to it.  While I find the lip balm applies quite smoothly, if it is very cold, the product might get a bit hardened.

loccitane ultra riche baume levres lip balm reviews ingredients

With ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, carnauba wax, and castor oil, this is definitely filled with moisturizing ingredients.  I love this lip balm, and it does a fabulous job of keeping my lips soft and moisturized.  It is one of the more expensive lip balms especially for the quantity, but it sure does a good job, so I really cannot complain much.  I get a slight burning/irritation with applying this lip balm when my lips are cracked (yup, it gets that bad) - not sure if it's just skin being hurt and sensitive or if it's some ingredient in the balm - but when my lips are normal I don't have any such problem.

Ingredients:
