Lush Porridge Soap: Review

Lush Porridge Soap - Start your day right with a generous helping of Porridge soap. Ideal for sensitive skin; it’s irresistible to everyone else, even bears.  We fill each one with oats to gently exfoliate and cleanse. As the oats mix with hot water, they create a calming milk that soothes and softens your entire body.  Also contains organic orange juice that is full of nutritious vitamin C, ideal for refreshing and brightening your skin, and keeping it clear. Oh, and did we mention the delicious caramel scent? All in all, this soap is just right.

I have dry, allergy-prone skin, and I love caramel-smelling yummilicious products, so of course, I had to try the Porridge Soap from Lush.  While it does smell like molasses or caramel or some kind of yummy sugary goodness, this soap does not really contain any of that.  What it does contain is pinhead oats - and lots and lots of them.  The tiny irregularly shaped oat bits provide a gentle exfoliation and are also soothing for sensitive skin.  The soap smells absolutely delicious and leaves behind a faint bit of the yummy smell on the skin after a bath

As with all Lush soaps, though, Porridge too needs a set of instructions to work with!  I have read a lot of reviews where people complain about the oats scratching their skin instead of being soothing or gentle.  Here's what I find helps:  Ensure that the soap bar is wet and the skin is wet too.  This helps the soap glide on easily on the skin rather than tugging and scratching at the skin.  Another thing to remember is, to get the best scrubbing action use in small, gentle, circular motions over the skin.  Follow these simple instructions, and this yummy-smelling bar will leave your skin smooth and soft.  It is a soap, though, not a moisturizer, so you do have to follow this with a moisturizer of choice to retain skin softness.

Since Lush adds a lot of oils to their soaps, they are invariably quite soft and disappear alarmingly fast, especially with hard water.  With soaps that contains bits and pieces in them, like in the case of the Porridge soap, the disappearing act is just faster.  Every bath will leave a few tiny bits of oats lying around in the bathtub/floor - actually look like tiny bugs - but you can just pour some water and wash them away.  I don't think they cause any clogging issues.  It's best not to leave the bar standing in water (just use any regular soap dish with holes or slits to keep the water drained out) and keep the soap dry when not in use.  This would help get a few more uses from each bar.

Overall, I would recommend the Lush Porridge soap to anyone with sensitive skin and/or with problems with dryness.  It's a gentle cleanser with a bit of a scrubby action to it that won't leave your skin dry or feeling stretched.

Have you tried Lush soaps?  Do you have a favorite?  Do share!

    1. You'll get an awesome deal around Christmas time if you're in the US (which I think you are). I've also ordered from the UK website, when I need to buy lots. You can save as much as 20-30% if you buy from the UK website ;) I still have about 7-8 soaps that I'm yet to use, 2-3 solid massage bars, a Mask of Magnaminty (still in my fridge)...sigh. And yet, I can buy more :D Thankfully, right now, I'm busy buying makeup palettes!

  6. Yessssshhhhhhhh I am in the US only....I don't know what I was doing last Christmas..living under some rock I guess cos I missed the sale completely :| Oh I have seen so many videos of Lush hauls from the UK site and cute samples too..did you get any samples with your order? I ordered from Lush US here online (which ships from Canada) and they sent this measly strip of Demon in the Dark soap...I don't think I have seen a thinner sliver ever! Wonder why they even bothered putting that in...I won't have minded no samples.

    And 7-8 soaps..OMG you are my Lushie twin!!!!!!! Yayyy...I love you already...:D :D :D

    1. Well we always have a "need" to order more, don't we? ;) I did get a LOT of samples from the UK site. You can specify your skin type, complexion, hair type etc. in the comments box when you check out and also mention any specific items you would like to request samples for :) They try to include what you've requested + some more :D Yeah, I usually try to limit my US orders to around Christmas time. I love their Fresh Face Masks - have only tried Oatifix though. Need to go buy some more. Right now, I'm busy finishing my TBS Face Mask (Nutriganics line). Have you tried Karma soap? It's pretty good - That's the only Lush soap my husband's OK using. :P Right now I'm using their Shower Jelly from last year. It's good, but can only be used with a loofah (too slippery otherwise).

I have a tumblr where I post some pics when I feel like (I'm very lazy when it comes to writing reviews I have to admit) - http://bitsncrumbs.com.

I think I've read almost all your blog posts :) (esp. the LUSH ones haha). I'm glad I found another LUSH fanatic.

    2. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....Grrrrrrrrrrrrr...I am so hopping mad I ordered stuff from here instead of the UK site...!!!!! Never mind..next time..do they have abnormally long delivery times? Sorry am asking you so many questions :D :D

And you are not going to believe this..but I was just thinking of asking you whether you like Crabtree Evelynn and saw your current obsession post over on your blog! I am so going to sit and read through your blog too :D And the doggie is so cute..what's his/her name? I had a friend who used to hate anyone saying "the dog"..you had to call him by his name..so apologies in advance if you feel the same way :)

    4. Haha - there's always a next time :D No worries re: the volume of questions. It's fun talking about LUSH. Anyway, their shipping is pretty fast. They shipped my order within 1 business day and I think it took a total of 1 week to get here in TX. Depends upon where in US you're based. I've heard people in CA have to wait much longer...

I only have 1 piece from Crabtree Evelyn, which is their Hand Lotion in Lavender :) I got it from the local Marshall's store (which is pretty awesome when it comes to finding bath and beauty products. Do you have anything from Crabtree and Evelyn? I've bought TBS Body Butters from Marshall's for only $5/each). Goodness, I feel like a coupon queen :-\

Thanks for the compliment on my dog. Yeah, he is a 10 month old puppy and his name is Sasha. He's a dachshund chihuahua mix :) You'll see loads of his pics on my blog. Sorry, I have to forewarn you that I blog about everything and not just makeup (though more than 50% of my posts are beauty related :P)

    5. I stay in California, so I guess it might take longer, but I think about 10 days is quite reasonable. Thanks..will order from there the next time :) I got a WHOLE LOT of Crabtree stuff..they had a flat 70% off on a lot of items so picked up that time.

Haaa.. no your blog is cute!
