Blush on Some Malice: The New Chanel Joues Contraste

Chanel Joues Contraste in Malice (available here) - $43

Unique powder blusher offers buildable coverage, from natural to dramatic, and imparts a flattering radiance to cheeks. Remarkably silky texture ensures easy application of seamless colour. Applied high on the cheekbone, or near the eyes, it instantly 'lifts' and softens the face for a more youthful look.

Malice is one of the four new/reformulated Joues Contraste blushes that Chanel released earlier this month.  The Chanel website shows this as a reddish-orange colour.  I should have known better than to trust that swatch, but I did just that and bought this blush right away.  Turns out it's a pinkish-coral blush - not really as intense a colour as I was expecting - but pretty nevertheless!  The packaging is a classic Chanel glossy black that has the uncanny ability to attract every speck of dirt within a 5-mile radius :P  Also included is a generously sized mirror and a small brush.

Like all Chanel Joues Contrastes, Malice too has fine shimmer in it - a fine golden shimmer.  The blush itself is soft and powdery and goes on quite smoothly on the skin.  Easy to blend and almost fool-proof.  This feels a little different from some of the earlier baked versions I have tried, though.  The shimmer is hardly visible on my skin (much less than the earlier subtle versions), and I am still undecided about which version I find easier to blend.

Chanel Joues Contraste Malice - Swatch/FOTD

The colour is a pretty peach-pink that leaves a subtle glow on the skin and a perfect pick for the summers.  Though it does have shimmer in it, on the skin it just seems to melt away and is hardly visible.  Here's how it looks on my hand, applied as a heavy swatch.  I swatched it on lighter skin so it shows up better.  On my face (darker skin :P), it shows up as a darker coral - more like what that swatch I fell in love with on the site looked like.  It's very pigmented, and even on my skin tone, it's best applied lightly.

Chanel JC blushes are quite pricey at $43, but the quality and ease of use make these my favorite blushes.  In fact, if I could only pick one product from Chanel (gasp!!), it would be these.

The French brand Caudalie is my latest obsession - a skincare brand that uses the natural antioxidant power of grape-seed extracts to make ultra-effective yet gentle beauty products.  As with any new brand, I decided to test the waters with some of the simpler products.  I tried the Caudalie Grape Water and liked it enough to try the Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser.  What's a little different about this cleanser is that while it's a liquid in the bottle, a pump or two to dispense it yields a soft foam.  I know that's not something very unique, but I still found it fascinating :D

For something that feels so gentle, the Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser does a surprisingly good job of cleaning up my face (removes most of my makeup too, though I don't use much and it's not waterproof) without leaving my skin feeling dry or stretched.  I love the mild fragrance that it has and also the fact that I don't seem to be running out of it all that very fast.  Overall, another fabulous product from Caudalie!   Do give this a try if you are on the lookout for a gentle yet effective cleanser :)

Sephora sure knows a thing or two about building up the anticipation - their website has been showing the Sephora + Pantone Collection for about a month now, but it was available for sale only recently.  I did a lot of fill-the-basket before finally settling on the collector's edition which had most of the products released with this collection (no nail colours or false lashes) at a price that was definitely lower than buying each product separately.  The UPS guy delivered the set in a HUGE box today, and I just couldn't wait to start clicking photos.

With a name like Tangerine Tango, there was no way this set was going to turn out tame!  I just got it today, and I haven't used any of the pieces beyond the swatching.  The packaging of the products is fabulous - the eyeshadow and the blush duo are packed similar to the Inglot palettes with tiny magnets at the corners.  So far, my favorite has been the Colour Prisma Blush - it's what I wanted to pick initially and just goes to show how sometimes the first instinct is the right one :P  Detailed reviews/FOTDs in a bit after I figure out how to use some of these products :D

Crabtree Evelyn 60 Second Fix for Dry Hands Care Scrub Manicure Moisturize Reviews Ingredients How to use Remedy Therapy Skincare Blog

Crabtree and Evelyn is my latest obsession when it comes to hand care (and foot care, but more on that later).  I loved their hand creams, and since it was time to replenish the stock, I decided to try out the Crabtree and Evelyn 60 Second Fix for Hands.  Available in mini (the one I am reviewing) and a larger size, this set contains a hand scrub (Hand Recovery) and a hand cream (Hand Therapy) - conveniently packed and meant to be used about 3 or 4 times a week to keep your hands looking soft and moisturized.  I picked the Citron version since that was one range I hadn't tried so far.

Crabtree and Evelyn Citron Hand Therapy - Review

The Hand Therapy is the scrub portion of the 60 Second Fix.  The citron version has an amazing fragrance - a mix of woody and citrus - that's not too strong or overwhelming yet quite refreshing.  To use, dispense a small amount of product on wet hands and use a hand-washing motion to spread the scrub all over the hands.  Do a gentle scrub for about a minute and wash off.

I love the smell of this product, and it does a good job at scrubbing.  It's gentle yet quite effective, and the results are quite obvious right from the first use.

Crabtree and Evelyn Hand Therapy Cream (Citron) - Review

The lightly fragranced Citron Hand Therapy Cream is the moisturizer half of the 60 Second Fix for Hands duo.  Similar to the other Crabtree and Evelyn hand creams, this a fast-absorbing, nongreasy cream that is perfect for day time use.

This is a soft white cream with macadamia nut oils and shea butter - absorbs easily and leaves behind a light fragrance.  The cream also has corn starch in it which is probably what makes it nongreasy
- no worries about leaving fingerprints on every glossy surface!
Crabtree Evelyn 60 Second Fix for Dry Hands Care Scrub Manicure Moisturize Reviews Ingredients How to use Remedy Therapy Skincare Blog
Crabtree and Evelyn Hand Therapy Cream (Citron) - Ingredients
The Hand Recovery scrub leaves my hands light moisturized with the macadamia oil and shea butter, and using this cream right after seals that in.  For drier/winter days, though, I would use a heavier cream.

From it's cheery packaging to the zesty fragrance and the fact that it actually does a good job at keeping my hands soft, there is nothing I don't like about the Crabtree and Evelyn 60 Second Fix for Hands.  The Hand Recovery scrub as well as the Hand Therapy cream are also sold separately.  Do give this a try the next time you are at a Crabtree and Evelyn shop :)

Illamasqua's newly lauched Human Fundamentalism collection features the bold colours and bright palettes that the brand is so synonymous with, but amidst all that colour also comes this gorgeous Neutral palette.  A must-have for any neutral-makeup lover with it's combination of neutral browns, a dark black, and a buttery cream highlighter, this comes packaged in the signature glossy black Illamasqua packaging which includes a large mirror.

Shades featured in the new Neutral Palette from Illamasqua:

Stealth:  A buttery cream matte highlighter.

Vintage:  An antiqued gold.

Obsidian:  A rich dark matte black.

Wolf:  A matte dark neutral brown.

Illamasqua Neutral Palette (clockwise starting from the black):  Obsidian, Wolf, Stealth, Vintage
The one thing missing from this palette is an applicator.  I never use the applicators provided with palettes (and it does seem to be a sentiment shared by most makeup users), so it's really not an issue with me, except that I have to remember to carry a brush along when I pack this one up for travel.  Now, on to the shades.  There are three matte shades and one antiqued golden shade to add a bit of light to the eyes.  I find the pigmentation medium to good - at par if not better than some of the other nekkid/neutral palettes I have swatched.  The swatches on my hand are without a primer, so that should give an idea about the pigmentation levels on these shadows.  Over a primer and/or with layering, the pigmentation is much more impressive.

Illamasqua Neutral Palette Swatches - (starting from the top):  Stealth, Wolf, Vintage, Obsidian

A couple of ways to use the Illamasqua Neutral Palette (found this info on Sephora):

  • Use the shadows with a blending brush to create a soft blended effect or a damp brush mixed with the Illamasqua sealing gel for a water-resistant finish.
  • Stealth is an ideal base color or a subtle highlighter for brows and cheeks.
  • Wolf, a unique neutral tone, can be used lightly for soft contouring on eyes/face or to build upon to create intensity and definition around the eyes.
  • Vintage adds light to wherever it is applied. Use to highlight brows, cheeks and the decollété or lightly over any color to add a shimmer finish.
  • Obsidian adds drama and depth to the eyes, and when mixed with water or Sealing Gel it transforms to the deepest of black liners.
Here's what I tried with the Illamasqua Neutral palette:

Illamasqua Human Fundamentalism Collection Neutral Palette FOTD Makeup Looks Blog Beauty Indian Reviews Swatches
Obsidian (matte black shade) used as a liner.  Did not use a sealant/dampening medium - this is just applied with a
thin angled brush on to primed lids.  The staying power is quite good, though, I have not tried it outdoors.

Smudged the black shadow liner and topped with a dusting of the dark brown shade to get a darker, smokey eye.
Illamasqua Human Fundamentalism Collection Neutral Palette FOTD Makeup Looks Blog Beauty Indian
Applied a wash off the antiqued gold shade to the inner half of the eye to bright a bit of light to the darker eye.
While this palette may seem a bit tame coming from a brand more famous for it's blue-green lipsticks and bright yellow eye shadows, in my opinion, this is a simple idea done right.  Whether you want a lighter wash of colour or a darker smokey eye, the well-matched shades in this palette would work great for just about any look.  The quality is excellent with no fall-out, creasing, or chalkiness, and the shadows are quite pigmented when used over a primer.  Overall, a fabulous palette and a must-have from Illamasqua.

I never thought I would say this, but the next time you go shopping for neutral makeup, try Illamasqua!

Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Infusion

Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Infusion (available here) - $25

While I don't have the kind of hair that might need relaxer treatments, but I definitely do have thicker, dry, color-treated hair and am always on the lookout for moisturizing, softening haircare products.  I have read a lot about the Carol's Daughter, so this time I decided to try out the Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Hair Infusion kit.  This set contains:

8 oz Khoret Amen Hair Smoothie, 2 oz Khoret Amen Hair Oil, Plastic Cap, and Applicator Tip

How to Use the Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Hair Infusion

The instructions on the box are pretty simiple.  Use the Khoret Amen Hair Oil on your scalp and the Khoret Amen Hair Smoothie like hair mask over the rest of your hair.  Cover with the plastic cap, wait 30 minutes and wash off.

carols daughter olive oil haircare infusion at home treatment dry relaxed transitioning natural indian reviews ingredients khoret amen smoothie conditioner how to use
For reference, my hair looks more like the after picture than the before version, but that's only on really good days and if I have a good haircut :P
So I said the "instructions on the box," and that's because there is another set of instructions inside that mentions using the oil as a scalp treatment and a bit over the length of the hair, washing as usual, and using the Khoret Amen Hair Smoothie as a conditioner.  I guess if your hair needs a LOT of detangling prior to washing, you can use the hair smoothie to do the job.  If not, just use it as a regular deep conditioner.  On to the review now.

Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Infusion - Khoret Amen Hair Oil

The first thing I noticed about this oil is the smell - it's extremely "perfumed," and while the smell is not really unpleasant in itself, it is definitely strong.  The oil contains olive oil mixed in with the goodness of plant extracts such as lavender, sage, juniper, etc.  I love the packaging - the applicator tip makes application so easy, I am going to save the bottle to use for ever :D  It's a light oil and absorbs easily and easy to wash off too.  While I didn't find it very different from my usual (unfragranced) extra-virgin coconut oil treatment, if you have never used hair oils before and can tolerate the strong smell, you might find this useful.

Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Infusion - Khoret Amen Hair Smoothie

The Khoret Amen Hair Smoothie is like a thick, deep conditioner.  I have tried using it both ways - using it as a mask before washing my hair or as a deep conditioner after washing (never both together).  This too has a similar strong fragrance as the oil, though it is comparatively milder.

carols daughter olive oil haircare infusion at home treatment dry relaxed transitioning natural indian reviews ingredients khoret amen smoothie conditioner how to use

With ingredients such as cocoa butter and olive oil, this is a conditioner made for the coarser/thicker hair.  It washes off easily and I don't get that slippery smooth feeling that comes with silicone-based conditioners (but this does contain amodimethicone).  It leaves my hair shinier and healthier and just a tiny bit softer.  If you have fine hair, though, you might find this conditioner too heavy to use regularly, but I can definitely get away with weekly use :D

Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Infusion - Khoret Amen Hair Smoothie (Ingredients)

My take on the Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Infusion:  Being a South Indian, oil-infusion treatments aren't anything new to me, and most homes in Kerala have bottles of coconut oil steeped in all kinds of ayurvedic ingredients.  Setting aside that bias, though, here's what I think of the Carol's Daughter Olive Oil Infusion:
  • Easy to use.  Love the applicator for applying the oil and the convenient plastic shower cap included in the package.
  • Detangling/Conditioning:  The hair smoothie would do a good job of detangling if that is what you are looking for.  Use it as a deep conditioner if you have normal hair that doesn't need detangling.
  • This a very strongly fragranced product, and the smell does linger on even after washing.  Definitely not for sensitive noses.
  • Silicones:  Sephora lists this as a silicone-free product, but it does contain amodimethicone.  If your scalp gets flaky with silicone-based products (like mine does), use the hair smoothie as a mask and wash off with a shampoo containing any of these:   SLS, SLES, cocamidopropyl betaine, cocobetaine, ALS, or ALES.
  • Cost:  This is quite a pricey product ($25), and I found the results just the same as I get with a regular coconut oil treatment.  Cost-wise, at least, I don't think this is something I need to add to my regular haircare routine.
I probably am not the ideal candidate to try this out, but I really didn't find any extra benefit with using this for my kind of hair.  It's a good product but really not essential for me.  Do give this a try, though, if you need some serious detangling and/or heavier conditioning.

So, this is what I spent my weekend doing - washing, reviewing :D  What about you - did anything useful this weekend, watched any movies?

Bare Minerals Big and Bright Eyeliner: Black Gold

Bare Minerals Big Bright Eyeliner delivers the look of larger, naturally brilliant eyes by visually enhancing the whites of eyes, so eyes look whiter and brighter.  The velvety formula glides on easily and delivers an unparalleled saturation of color with an infusion of conditioning botanical extracts, antioxidants, and 100% pure Bare Minerals.

I got a small trio set a couple of days back to round up my Sephora order, and Black Gold is the one I am trying from the lot.

I wanted to post the entire set, since it's just 3 small liners, but with this week being all rainy and cloudy, I just couldn't get any decent photos.  It's just this one for today :D  Anyhow, Big and Bright Eyeliner in Black Gold is a regular black twist-up eyeliner with some sparkles thrown in.

Bare Minerals Big and Bright Eyeliner in Black Gold - Likes/Dislikes

  • What I like about it:  The texture is smooth and the sparkles don't feel gritty.  It glides on easily.  It isn't very pigmented, and if you are looking for an alternative to the a jet black eyeliner, you might find this a better/subtler option.
  • What I absolutely hate about it:  It really doesn't stay on much.  While it doesn't leave raccoon eyes, it does transfer slightly to the crease and mostly just fades away in about an hour or two depending on how hot/humid it is.
I took this photo for some other post (which didn't really work out :P), so here's how Bare Minerals Big and Bright Eyeliner in Black Gold looks on my eyes.

I got this as part of a set of 3 Bare Minerals Big and Bright eyeliner pencils - retailing for around $10.  I haven't yet used the other two liners from that set, but I am not impressed enough with these to bother repurchasing.  Have you tried the Bare Minerals Big and Bright eyeliner pencils - liked them?

Inglot Eyeshadow: D.S. 458

Inglot D.S. 458 (available here) - $12 for the full size and about $5 as part of the Freedom System palette.

Colour:  A greyish-brown matte base with scattered golden (and purplish pink) sparkles.  The different hues to the sparkles aren't really visible, though, unless it's a zoomed-in macro photo.

How I use it:  For an easy brown smokey eye, use a brown/black eyeliner pencil near the lashline, smudge, and use Inglot D.S. 458 as an all-over lid colour.  Dab a shimmery eyeshadow only on the center of the lid to liven it up with a pop of colour.

Inglot D.S. 458:  Swatch and on my eyes

inglot makeup eyeshadows reviews swatches looks eotd fotd DS 458 grey brown beauty blog
inglot makeup eyeshadows reviews swatches looks eotd fotd DS 458 grey brown beauty blog
I rarely (if ever) use more than one eye shadow at a time, and that's how Inglot DS 458 generally gets treated.  I can get away with using this as a brown-smokey eye or just as a dusting over the lids, but if you are lighter skinned you could also use this on the outer corner to intensify a lighter eye shadow.  As you can see in the swatch, the sparkles aren't all that prominent out of the pan, and the matte base is what is more obvious.  I haven't a fall-out issue with this eye shadow, but I won't use it to smudge close to the lashline - the sparkles do tend to fly and irritate the eye.
In India, Inglot refills retail for around Rs. 300.  I got this as a part of Inglot's 10-colour Freedom System palette, and I am not really sure of the exact amount I paid :)

Caudalie Organic Grape Water Spray

Caudalie Organic Grape Water Spray (available here) - $8/50 mL and $13/100 mL.  100% USDA certified organic grapes. Extracted directly from grapes during the harvest and enriched with moisturizing polysaccharides and mineral salts - this mist soothes, refreshes, and hydrates the skin.

I bought the Caudalie Grape Water spray a while back to use during the dry winter months - the heater tends to make the air very dry and leave my skin feelign quite parched.  Being acne-prone, I didn't want to move to an oilier moistruzer, so compromised with a spritz of this.  The packaging is quite simple, and it delivers a fine even mist every time.  My only gripe is there are always some droplets around the nozzle, and I have to leave the bottle standing upright to avoid leaks.  I don't know if I just got a faulty bottle or if it's something with the way I spray this :-|

Vitis Vinifera face facial caudalie organic natural skincare blog beauty toner softener hydrating moisturizing spray grape water summers dry reviews ingredients

How To Use the Caudalie Grape Water Spray

The spray looks and feels just like water, and I couldn't really detect any fragrance to it either.  It doesn't leave behind any obvious residue on my skin either.  A few ways to use this spray
  • As a moisturizing, refreshing toner:  Right after I clean my face and before applying my moisturizer.  This gives a bit of moisture to my skin and helps the moisturizer absorb better.
  • To set makeup:  Spritz lightly over powder foundation to avoid any chalky appearance.
  • Hydrating spritz any time of the day:  A fine mist of this any time of the day gives an instant boost of hydration to the skin.  Store it in the fridge for a refreshing spritz on a hot sunny day.
It's a simple product that does what it says.  I have not noticed any drastic difference in my skin with using this, but I do like the idea of using grape water (which I am assuming has some antioxidant benefits) instead of plain water or a concoction of preservatives and chemicals.  Love the spritzer but do wish the little leakage issue wasn't there - I didn't see any mention of it on any reviews, though, so it might just be something with the bottle I got!
