5 Ways to Add Olive Oil To Your Beauty Routine

Olive oil is a fat obtained from the olive (the fruit of Olea europaea; family Oleaceae), a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. The oil is produced by grinding whole olives and extracting the oil by mechanical or chemical means. It is commonly used in cooking, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and soaps. Olive oil is used throughout the world, but especially in the Mediterranean countries.

Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil Makeup Beauty Blog Skincare Haircare Benefits and Uses
Extra-virgin cold-pressed olive oils go through the minimum amount of processing/heating and hence retain most of the naturally present nutrients and antioxidants.
Rich in polyphenols and monounsaturated fats, olive oil (extra virgin, cold-pressed) is one of the healthiest oils to add to any diet, and its heart-healthy and anti-oxidant properties are quite well known.  This nutrient-rich oil is also quite a favorite, though, among makeup and beauty mavens around the world, and here are 5 reasons why you need to make space for this in your beauty wardrobe.

1.  Moisturizer:  Rich in vitamin E, oleic acid, hydroxytyrosol (a powerful antioxidant), and squalene (that closely resembles our skin's own natural oils), olive oil nourishes and protects the skin by fighting against free radicals that can cause skin discoloration and damage.  You could use the oil directly as a moisturizer or as a prebath oil massage.  Also, look for products where olive oil is listed as a major ingredient, like the Bodyshop Olive Body Butter - a must-have for anyone with dry skin problems!

Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil Makeup Beauty Blog Skincare Haircare Benefits and Uses
Olive oil works great as a moisturizer to nourish and give a healthy glow to the skin, but a convenient alternative to applying the oil is a moisturizer with olive oil as a key ingredient - TBS Olive Body Butter is my favorite!
2. Olive Oil pampering for your hands (or feet):
  • Soak your nails in a bowl of warm olive oil to instantly smoothen the cuticles and make nails stronger.
  • Give your hands/feet a generous massage with olive oil.  Soak a towel in warm water, wring out most of the water from it, and wrap your hands in it - this helps the oil penetrate better, leaving your hands much smoother and nourished in just 5 minutes.  You could also microwave the towel to lukewarm, but I have never tried it myself.  Check the temperature of the towel before using it to avoid burning your skin, and never put a dry towel into the microwave!
  • Mix up some olive oil and sugar for a quick instant scrub :D

Any easy DIY coffee-sugar scrub with olive oil and cinnamon for a hint of spice.
3.  The OCM -  oil cleansing method:  This is a deep cleanse for the face using oils to draw out impurities from the pores.  My simple way of doing this is to do a 5-minute massage on clean, dry face with olive oil.  Then I take a warm, moistened washcloth and cover my face with it, allowing the warmth to open the pores.  Then, I wipe off most of the oil from my face and follow with a clay-based mask to remove excess oils and clean up the pores.  This is not something I do very often, since I am already blessed with sort of oily skin, but it is quite useful during the drier winter months and gives a healthy relaxed glow to the face.

Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil Makeup Beauty Blog Skincare Haircare Benefits and Uses

4.  Makeup remover:  While I do like to try/buy all kinds of makeup remover, I have to agree some olive oil (or coconut oil) on a cotton round would do just as good a job!  For use on my waterline, I rub some olive oil on to a Q-tip and take off any remaining bits of kohl.  I don't use contact lenses, but I guess it's safe to assume that you should be taking them out before starting with makeup removal.

5.  Deep treatment for hair.  Warm some olive oil in the microwave (check after a few seconds to avoid overheating or just take some oil in a bowl and sit it in some hot water to heat it up).  Apply generously to the scalp and along the length of the hair.  Wait about 30 minutes before washing it off.  To help the oil penetrate better into the hair shaft, wrap hair in a warm towel.

These are a few options that work for me, but depending on your skin type, it may or may not work for you, so tweak accordingly.  For instance, I would never try an oil cleanse in the summers - with my acne-prone skin, that's just handing out an invitation for pimple attacks!  Also, I prefer to use extra virgin, cold-pressed olive oil.

What about you - do you use oils as part of your skin/haircare routine?

On my Nails This Week: Chanel Le Vernis Rose Cache

Chanel Le Vernis Rose Cache (available here) - $26

My obsession with Chanel nail polishes continues, and on my nails this week is the pinkish-beige Rose Cache.  A creamy opaque color, this has very fine shimmer scattered throughout, but it's not really visible unless I look very very closely at the bottle/swatch in sunlight.  Certainly couldn't get it to show in the photos.  The finish is fabulous, nonstreaky, and you can either apply it semi-sheer with one coat or go opaque with 2-3 coats.

Chloe Eau de Parfum

Chloe Eau de Parfum (available here)

Capturing the spirit of women, the Chloé vision is not about one singular woman, but rather about the rich and varied personalities of all Chloé women. This fresh, smooth floral fragrance evokes sublime powdery rose. The effect is chic, comfortable, and entirely addictive.

Top notes of pink peony, freesia, and lychee embody subtle freshness. At the heart, midnotes of magnolia flower, lily of the valley, and rose rise to sublimated femininity. A base of velvety elegance comes to fruition through cedarwood, amber, and honey.

Inspired by the details in Chloé's fashion, the flacon's heavy but softly curved and grooved glass reflects femininity and strength.

Notes:  Pink Peony, Freesia, Lychee, Magnolia Flower, Lilly of the Valley, Rose, Cedarwood, Amber, Honey.

The first note I detect with this perfume is a rose.  Now, normally that would ensure I never buy this, but a sample of this was stashed away in my bag, and I ended up having to use it on a hot summer day.  As the day wore on, I found myself loving the way the fragrance opens up.  The powdery rose note lingers on, but with time, it mixes with amber to give it a more musky sweet note.  I don't like associating myself with anything rose, but despite all my attempts at not liking this perfume, for some reason I love how it smells on me.  Plus it lasts and lasts forever!  A little goes a long way with this perfume, and it's been the one I reach for the most this summer.

Clinique products have always been my last resort in skincare.  My issues with acne breakouts prompted me to try the 3-step products - the cleanser, clarifying lotion, and the very famous Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel - and while you won't find me raving about Clinique all that often, I have to agree, that did sort out my breakout problem in a jiffy :D  This time around, my skin did a complete about-face and got all dry and flaky, and I decided to try out the sample of the Clinique Moisture Surge Intense moisturizer that I got from Sephora.

This lightly fragranced, light pink creamy gel is a moisturizer meant for the Clinique skin types 1 and 2, and I am a skin type 3 (oily-combination skin type), so to start off this is not a product meant for my skin.  That said, I used this during a particularly dry, dehydrated time of the year, and my skin was quite parched.  The Clinique Moisture Surge does a fabulous job at sorting out any dry skin issues almost instantaneously.  It feels quite light and refreshing, almost like soaking the skin in moisture.  It never did make my skin oily, but in about 3 or 4 days, after my dry skin issues had been sorted out, it did cause a tiny breakout on my cheek.  Overall, a fabulous moisturizer for anyone with dry skin problems (or as a temporary fix for any dry skin issues).  I didn't buy the full-size version since this isn't a moisturizer recommended for daily use on my skin type.  I still have lots remaining and would probably use it the next time I have a dry skin problem.

What's In My Bag: The Travel Edition

I love reading the "What's In My Bag" posts that are so common with makeup/fashion blogs - peeping into another person's bag is so much fun online :D  We went on a short trip last weekend, and as I was packing I got the idea of doing a post of my own too on what I pack for a short trip - makeup and beauty-wise - in my small handbag.  I used my Fossil crossbody bag since it's convenient and light/small enough to carry around everywhere yet, surprisingly, manages to hold a lot of things!  So, here's what I carried with me this time...

Skincare:  Crabtree and Evelyn Body Lotion, Maybelline Baby Lips Balm, Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock, NARS Tinted Moisturizer, and Lush Dream Cream (I store it in a small sampler tub and use it for my face).  I have read a million times - mostly in sunscreen adverts - about how using sunscreens/sunblocks prevents tanning but doesn't work that way for me!
Makeup Essentials Travel - Chanel Eyelash Curler Matte Lumiere Powder Foundation Josie Maran Argan Blush Diorshow Mascara
Makeup:  Chanel Matte Lumiere Powder Foundation and Eyelash Curler, Urban Decay Eyeliner Perversion, Josie Maran Argan Cheek Stick in Pink Petal, Diorshow Mascara (a small sample tube - GWP Sephora), NARS Vendanges lipstick.  I forgot to take an eye makeup remover, and OMG, UD Perversion just won't come off without one!
Summer Travel Perfume Essentials Bvlgari Omnia Coral Fragrance
Sample vials of Bvlgari Omnia Coral perfume - another GWP from Sephora.  A light fruity floral that is perfect for the summer, I love the subtle smell and the lasting power - want to get a full-size version, but I doubt that's going to happen any time in the near future (got loads to finish off), hence the mini-review :P :P

So, that's what I carried in my bag this weekend.  What about you - what do you like to lug around when you are on a short trip?  Oh, as for my trip, here's a snapshot:

Travel Redding California Shasta Lake Dam Sundial Bridge Photos Blog
With no better plans, we went on a quick trip to nearby Redding, about 4 hours from where I stay.  Didn't really do much there either - spent some time at the Shasta Lake (1) - an artificial lake created by the construction of the Shasta Dam (3) across the Sacramento River (4).  Took some time to find the Sundial Bridge (2) - and while I was trying to get a good photo of the bridge, a couple walking down the bridge assumed I was taking their photo and stood smiling for me to snap a pic :D

Bodyshop Love Etc... Body Butter

The Bodyshop Love Etc... Body Butter (available here) - $18

If you love being enveloped in a captivating fragrance which inspires you, you will love this fragrance with its sensuous union of iconic feminine jasmine, with indulgent notes of vanilla, sandalwood, and musk cream.  Especially created by The Body Shop with one of the world's finest "noses", Dominique Ropion, even the name chosen signifies love in all its forms. You don't have to change the world wearing this fragrance, but you will love that this is the first Eau de Parfum to feature an alcohol perfume base created from an ingredient which is fairly-traded and organic.

The Bodyshop Love ETC... Body Butter Dry Skincare Makeup Beauty Blog Reviews Ingredients Fragranced Perfumed Moisturizer

I am a huge fan of TBS body butters and would definitely list them as a must-have for any dry-skinned person out there, but I had never really tried anything from their fragrance-butter combinations.  I need a good, proper moisturizer, and somehow I never felt that the fragranced versions would be any good at all.  I bought the Love ETC... body butter only because I got it pretty deeply discounted during one of the many TBS sales.

The Bodyshop Love ETC... Body Butter Dry Skincare Makeup Beauty Blog Reviews Ingredients Fragranced Perfumed Moisturizer

Like all the Bodyshop body butters, Love ETC... too comes packaged in a jumbo tub.  A creamy pale-pink product, this body butter smells delicious!  A mix of jasmine, vanilla, and sandalwood, I would describe the smell as a combination of faint vanilla and a musky, creamy sweetness.  It does a fabulous job of moisturizing too, though, it is lighter compared to some of the other TBS body butters - pretty good for summers for my dry skin.  Do give this a try if you like sensual, sweet fragrances (it isn't as strong as the perfume itself, but it is fragranced) with the added benefits of long-lasting moisture.  It is a lighter body butter, and if sorting out dry skin is your main priority, I would suggest some of the heavier body butters like TBS Olive Body Butter.

Flora by Gucci Eau de Toilette

Gucci Flora is a subtle, sophisticated, floral fragrance inspired by princesses from the past, present, and future. The Flora Donna is a young, classic, and refined woman with the 'Gucci edge' of power and sensuality. The first Flora scarf was exclusively designed for Princess Grace of Monaco in 1966 and soon became one of the most popular Gucci icons. This scent is an expression of the Flora legacy. Its seductive layers mirror the playful details and bright colors that channel the heart of a fashion empire.

Gucci Flora Eau de Toilette Spray - My Review

From the packaging to the fragrance, Gucci Flora is one of my favorite perfumes.  Straight out of the bottle, much like most perfumes, the smell might seem a little too overbearing.  Spritz on a bit and give it a bit of time before the actual fragrance comes out  - woody, floral, and a hint of sweetness that comes out as the fragrance settles down.  I would recommend this for someone younger who has outgrown the cloyingly sweet/vanilla smells, and of course, for the not-so-young like me who just like deeper florals with a bit of warmth to them.  Not one to follow any rules with perfumes, I wear this whenever I feel like - day or night just because I love it so much, but if you are the kind who prefers subtler scents, you might want to keep this for the evenings/fall.  The one big reason I love this perfume - a little dab stays on forever on my skin, not a common occurrence with most perfumes :D

Blue-Brown Smokey Eye and Coral Lips - 4 Easy Steps

What does a girl stuck with boring work do when the sleep-bug bites?  Get up and play around with some makeup, of course!  I picked a smokey eye with a coral lip - paired with my comfy PJs, I was the best-dressed girl at this home-office today :D

I used Inglot eyeshadow DS483, L'Oreal Eyeshadow duo in Shady (brown), with Chanel Brun Intense eyeliner to sketch out this look.  Here's my version of a blue-brown smokey eye in 4 easy steps:

Applied UD primer potion all over the lid.  Applied brown eyeliner along the upper lash line (I used Chanel Brun Intense, but I would rather use a cheaper eyeliner since it's going to be covered up anyway!), and smudge it slightly.  This ensures I don't leave any gaps of visible skin between the eyeshadow and the lashes.

Finish with brown eyeliner along the upper lashline, curl lashes and apply mascara.  I used black eyeliner along the waterline and smudged it with a pencil brush.

MAC Captive Lipstick - Reviews, Swatches

MAC Captive Lipstick (available here) - $14.50

MAC Captive is described as a pinkish plum lipstick on the MAC website, and I would say the description is quite accurate.  A Satin finish, the lipstick strikes the perfect balance between a matte effect - packing awesome pigmentation and staying power - while staying a lot less drying than the regular matte lipsticks.  Captive is a darker shade that would work just great for fall, but because of the pink mixed in with the plum, this would also work great for a statement lip during the summers.

MAC Captive Lipstick - Swatch/FOTD

On my Indian/darker skin tone, this is a lipstick works ideal for evenings/fall, but like I said earlier, I do use it during the summers when I want to wear a darker lip for the daytime.  This is my summer-friendly alternative to a darker, red lip :D  Being a pinkish plum, Captive has a bit more brightness to it than straight-out severe plums.

MAC Makeup Cosmetics Captive Lipstick Beauty Blog Reviews Swatches FOTD Looks
MAC Makeup Cosmetics Captive Lipstick Beauty Blog Reviews Swatches FOTD Looks
For some reason, the pink in the lipstick gets reflected on my lips more than the plum - and I for one am not complaining.  Darker plum lipsticks tend to be somewhat aging on my skin tone!
The pigmentation and staying power is pretty impressive - lasting a good 3-4 hours on me, and it sort of stains my lips, so the color remains even after a meal.  Not the most hydrating of lipsticks, Captive (satin finish lipstick) doesn't really dry out my lips.  I do ensure that my lips are exfoliated before applying, though (use a gentle sugar scrub or a soft toothbrush), since it tends to magnify any existing flakiness.

If you are looking for a slightly darker shade of lipstick without going too dark, give this pink-plum Captive a try :)

The Better Buy: MAC Fluidlines Vs. Maybelline Gel Liners

I have been obsessed with gel liners since my first buy - MAC Siahi.  Once I came to the US, I discovered the Maybelline gel liners and quite promptly bought almost all the shades.  Two reasons why I went on a crazy Maybelline-buying spree - the handy brush included in the packaging and if you pick up during a sale, you get 2 Maybelline for the price of 1 MAC Fluidline!  Now that's math even I can understand :D  A year later, here's my opinion on MAC Fluidlines versus the Maybelline gel liners.

Best Eye Makeup MAC Fluidlines Versus Maybelline Drugstore Gel Liners Beauty Blog Reviews

I store all my gel liners upside down with lids tightly screwed on to prevent them from drying.  All my Maybelline liners, though, are almost dried out while the 2 older MAC Fluidlines that I have are going strong.  Needless to say in this case at least, it's you get what you pay for!  While I still think Maybelline makes some of the best affordable drugstore makeup, when it comes to gel liners, I prefer the pricier MAC ones.  Now, if only MAC would give the eyeliner brushes for free :P :P

What about you - which is your favorite gel liner?

Beige by Chanel

Chanel Le Vernis Beige (565) available exclusively online at the Chanel website - $26

Spotted first on Kristen Stewart and January Jones at the Met Gala, Chanel's much hyped nail polish that was supposed to be a "secret" got mostly lukewarm reactions much before it's release on May 16, 2012.  A beige, even if it's from Chanel, does lower expectations a lot.  I did order it, though, soon as it became available online, and here are the photos (and my review).

Chanel Le Vernis Beige is opaque, creamy, and the color reminds me of really milky coffee.  There is a very fine pink shimmer mixed into the formula, but other than catching flashes of it in the bottle, I really cannot catch it on my nails.  The color goes on quite opaque with 2 coats and if you are good at application, you could get away with just 1 coat imo.  The formula is fabulous, the best among the few Chanels that I have tried.  It dries pretty fast, goes on nonstreaky, and even for someone as clumsy as I am, it does apply quite beautifully.

After seeing the Met Gala pics, I was expecting a pale beige nail polish with an orange cast to it.  Chanel Beige is definitely not orange, and at least to me, its not another boring beige.  I tried a lot of bright colors this year, and while splashes of color definitely brighten my mood, once the trend passes, it's the simple classy colors like this that I tend to use the most.  If you are looking for something sophisticated and classy, do give this a try - you won't be disappointed, I promise!

Urban Decay Primer Potion - Original

Urban Decay Primer Potion Original (available here) - $9 to $30

The most legendary primer in the beauty industry, the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is coveted by makeup artists and makeup junkies alike because it guarantees more vibrant eyeshadow that lasts for 24 hours and never creases!  Once you experience its powers (plus how smoothly it glides on – an added bonus) you’ll never want to live without it.  Available in 4 shades - Original that dries down invisible and Greed, Sin, and Eden that can be used as highlighters or shadows too.

Urban Decay Primer Potion - Original formula
The Urban Decay Primer Potion is one of those makeup products that has quite a cult following.  In fact, for a long time in my makeup-limited world, this was the only primer I knew about.  Staying in India, though, all I could do was read the rave reviews about this online.  Not anymore :D  I snagged all 4 UD primers some time back, and this is the first one I tried out.

Now available in a much more convenient tube packaging, the Urban Decay primer potions were previously available only in the instantaneously recognizable curvy bottles with a flocked applicator.

The Urban Decay Primer Potion Original version is a beige coloured product that dries down to an almost invisible finish.  You only need a tiny bit of product to cover each eyelid (even for someone with ample eyelid real estate like I do).  Applying more tends to make it go on patchy.   The primer goes on smoothly and is quite easy to blend.

Urban Decay Primer Potion - Original - The Eyeshadow Test :D
In the swatch test above, I used heavy swatches of the same eyeshadow both with and without the UD primer.  The swatch with the primer is the actual color of the eyeshadow.  The swatch without the primer is actually quite sheer and the colour looks different because of my skin undertone showing through.  Both in terms of bringing out the vibrancy/true colours of the eye shadows as well as crease-free long-wearing application, the UD Primer Potion in Original does a fabulous job.  It is definitely one of the best I have tried so far - okay, well maybe it is the best I have ever tried.  Expensive, but a little goes a long way with this product!

Side note on how to get the product out of the bottle as it gets over:  There are tons of videos on You Tube about how to get every last bit of product out of the bottle.  I haven't tried any of those - not yet reached that stage.  I think standing the bottle upside and down and letting gravity do the job might be all I will do.
