Inglot Purple Eyeshadow Pearl 439: Review, Swatch, FOTD

Inglot Eyeshadow Pearl 439A shimmery, satin purple, Pearl 439 has a satin texture that is quite typical of shadows from Inglot's "Pearl" range.  There is very fine bluish violet shimmer scattered throughout the shadow, and on skin swatches it has a pearlescent shine.  I ordered this eyeshadow, going by online descriptions and swatches, as part of the Inglot Freedom System Palette.  The color is a little more bright than what I would generally pick up on my own, and I haven't used it much either.  Of late, though, I have figured the best way to use this is along the outer corners over other brown/plum shadows.  The pigmentation on this eyeshadow is awesome, and there is no creasing, smudging with this.  Scroll on for photos and swatches.

Probably because of the not-so-great light, my camera just couldn't pick up the true color of this eyeshadow.  Thankfully, I had an older photo to add for reference - the photo on the right shows the more accurate color.

I have no idea why my right eye looks like it has no eyeshadow/brown eyeshadow on it.  I used a brown shadow all over my lid and a generous amount of Inglot Pearl 439 on the outer half so it shows up in the photos - and I assure you, I did that on both my eyelids!!  Anyway, in real life, I would use much less of the purple eyeshadow and concentrate it more towards the outer corner, but that didn't get picked up by my camera so I added some more :P

Probably because of the bluish shimmer present in this shadow, the color leans towards the bluish-purple in my photos.  The actual color is a little more purple and less blue than what is in the photos.  While this is not a shade I reach for that often, I would definitely recommend Inglot Pearl 439 if you are into brighter eye makeup.  Because it is intensely pigmented, you would need only the tiniest bit of shadow, and the texture makes it very easy to blend.

MAC Holiday 2012 Makeup Collection (Part II): Fabulousness Eye Kits, Primped Out Look Bags, Sinfully Chic Nordstrom Exclusive Face Kit - Swatches

Continuing with the swatches on the much-await, almost completely sold out MAC Holiday 2012 makeup collection, today I will be sharing the swatches from some of the face and eye kits included in this collection.  As I mentioned earlier, this is a HUGE collection with a lot of products, and I have missed out on swatching quite a few of the pieces.  The Glamour Daze collection that I had swatched yesterday had some limited edition/new products, but for the most part, the packaging was the standard/regular MAC packaging.  Not so with the various Face and Eye kits MAC has launched just in time for the holidays.  These feature pretty fabulous packaging and some carefully mixed and matched shades to cater to just about every skin tone.

MAC Fabulousness Holiday Eye Kits:  Stylish inside and out, each of these elegant eye shadow compacts feature a palette of 5 perfectly coordinated colours that come packaged in a satin-tufted compact with a touch of modern romance with its demure black patent bow accent.  The compact also includes an interior mirror.

MAC Primped Out:  Featuring leopard-print M·A·C Holiday bags and kits to fill the season with glamour, this collection includes a couple of eye, lip/face kits, and some mini brush kits.  I swatched only 2 of these kits, and I thinkkk, most of the products in these kits are permanent shades and/or repromotes.  The two kits/bags that I did swatch:

MAC Holiday 2012 Glamour Daze Makeup Collection: Swatches (Part I)

MAC Glamour Daze Holiday 2012 Makeup Collection:  The glamour of getting ready to step out for the holidays. Sweet to sexy, lips to nails. Every angle, every detail obsessed over. An unforgettable look emerges in a cool cloud of pale pink edged with smoky grey - the shimmer of a festive finishing touch. One last glance and you're out the door.  Limited edition.

I was at Nordstrom today and spotted the MAC Glamour Daze collection at the counter (there was also an event at the MAC store).  The MAC counter seemed very quiet, and nobody to bother me while I swatched to my heart's content.  Turns out - just about everything was sold out, so the SAs were a happy bunch and quite happy to leave me alone :D  Anyway, here are some swatches from the MAC Glamour Daze Holiday 2012 makeup collection - it's a huge collection, and I have missed out quite a few products:

7 Eye Makeup Brushes You Really Need

While the best makeup artists can do brilliant work with something as basic as a sponge-tip applicator or their finger tips, applying makeup does get so much easier with the right tools.  This is perhaps most obvious with eye makeup where most of us need all the help we can get!  With a multitude of brands and a variety of shapes, picking up the right brushes can be quite confusing, so here's my list of 7 must-have eye makeup brushes that should help you start off (no real brand recommendations here).

7 Must Have Basic Essential angled flat fluffy crease blending smudger pencil Eyeshadow Eyeliner Makeup Brushes Indian beauty Blog

1.  Flat eyeshadow brush:  Densely packed bristles and a flat shape makes this the perfect brush to place eye shadows on the lid.  This sort of brush is great for eye shadows that tend to fly around a bit or need careful placement, like in case of pigments - just pick up the colour with the brush and press it into place on the eyelid.

7 Must Have Basic Essential angled flat fluffy crease blending smudger pencil Eyeshadow Eyeliner Makeup Brushes Indian beauty Blog

2. Fluffy shadow brush:  Similar to the flat eye shadow brush in that its used to apply shadows to the lid, the fluffy eye shadow brush is, of course, fluffier.  The larger brush head helps with faster application of eyeshadow and also doubles as a blending brush in a pinch because of the slightly rounded head.

7 Must Have Basic Essential angled flat fluffy crease blending smudger pencil Eyeshadow Eyeliner Makeup Brushes Indian beauty Blog

3.  Highlighter brush:  Slightly larger than the regular fluffy eyeshadow brush, as the the name implies, this is used to apply highlighter just below your brow bone.  This captures the light making the brow bone look more prominent and the eyes more opened up.  To be honest, though, I just use a fluffy shadow brush to apply the highlighter too!

4.  Blending/crease brush -  A blending brush has slightly floppy, soft bristles which coupled with the tapered head helps with blending eyeshadow and diffusing colour softly.  A crease brush is a little more compact and helps place and blend colors in the crease area and because of it's smaller size gives more precise application.  For simpler/beginner's eye makeup, I think you can just get away with using the same brush both for both.

7 Must Have Basic Essential angled flat fluffy crease blending smudger pencil Eyeshadow Eyeliner Makeup Brushes Indian beauty Blog

5.  Eyeliner brush:  With a fine, pointy tip, this brush is a must for drawing thin, precise lines and keeping the liner as close to the lashes as possible.  For liquid liners, I use the thin brushes that usually come as part of the packaging, but for gel liners I find slightly flatter brushes (like this one that comes with the Maybelline Gel liners) easier to use.

7 Must Have Basic Essential angled flat fluffy crease blending smudger pencil Eyeshadow Eyeliner Makeup Brushes Indian beauty Blog

6.  Angled Eyeliner brush:  A flat brush with firm bristles that are cut at an angle, I like to use this with powder eye shadows - use this to press the shadow down close to the lash line, giving a much softer line than what you would get with a liquid liner.  This also works great for filling in the brows with a powder shadow.

7 Must Have Basic Essential angled flat fluffy crease blending smudger pencil Eyeshadow Eyeliner Makeup Brushes Indian beauty Blog

7.  Smudger/pencil brush:  This brush has a smaller tapered head with short densely packed bristles.  Best for smudging eyeliners to create softer lines and/or smudge shadows along the lower lash line. As someone who rarely ventures beyond a black pencil/kohl liner, this brush is my absolute favorite!

7 Must Have Basic Essential angled flat fluffy crease blending smudger pencil Eyeshadow Eyeliner Makeup Brushes Indian beauty Blog

From the ever-popular but more expensive MAC brushes to the dependable drugstore brands like Ecotools and Sonia Kashuk, there are a variety of options available for each of these brushes.  I use a mixed bunch from TBS, Ecotools, and Sonia Kasuk and find them quite sufficient for now.  Whatever brush you choose to pick, a couple of things to look for would be:
  • Avoid picking up brushes that have splayed/wayward fibers, and secretly give it a slight tug to see if any of the fibers are loose :P
  • Pick brushes that have the metal ferrule portion (where the fibers go into the brush) crimped - it means the brush fibers are less likely to come out with the very first wash.  It's not essential, but it is an added durability factor.
So that was my quick guide to eye make brushes.  What are your favorite/go-to eye makeup brushes?  Do share!

Makeup Basics: How to Apply Liquid Liners Perfectly...and Cheat if You Can't!

Liquid liners are considered some of the more difficult versions to use, but what they lack in ease of use, they do make up in terms of staying power and precise application..err..that second one is for those who have mastered the art of applying them :P  A simple black liquid eyliner (Lakme Instaliner) was the first "proper makeup" I applied - it was back in college, and I learned to apply it from my friend, Shiney.  I could never ever get a thin, straight line the way she could, and I remember her telling me it just gets easier with practice.  I would just go on drawing thicker and thicker lines trying to make it look even, and I still don't get a thin precise line, but yes, it does get easier with time.  Here are a few things that have worked for me.

Makeup Basics How to Apply Liquid Eyeliners Easy Steps Indian Beauty Blog FOTD Looks
  • The first rule of liquid liner application:  Get as close to the mirror as you can - or get one of those magnifying mirrors which make the pores in your skin look like craters on the moon :P  Okay, seriously though, because liquid liners tend to give well-defined lines, they are also a lot less forgiving than say a pencil liner, so you really need to be able to see what you are doing.
  • A steady hand does help quite a bit with a precise line, so try resting your elbow on a surface while drawing the line to prevent wobbling.
  • Unlike pencil liners which you can apply in little dots and connect them later, liquid eyeliners are best applied in one continuous line.  Start with a thinner line at the inner corner of the eye, making it slightly thicker as you move to the outer corner.  That's one way.  Another way is to start from the middle of the lid and finish to the outer corner, then apply the liner from the inner corner and join in the mid portion.  I prefer the first method; the second method I read in a Bobbi Brown book (Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual).
  • Another tip from a makeup professional:  "For ultimate precision, place your finger on your skin just near the brow bone, and lift the eyelid upward. Then apply with the stylo held parallel to the lash line.” - Lena Koro, International Makeup Stylist, NARS.
That was the basics of how to apply a liquid eyeliner - pretty simple and easy, and like my friend told me, it does get easier with practice. If it doesn't, though, then you learn to cheat your way into a perfect line, and here's how you do that.

Makeup Basics How to Apply Liquid Eyeliners Easy Steps Indian Beauty Blog FOTD Looks
  • When applying any liner, make sure you apply the line as close to the lashes as possible and avoid any gaps showing between the liner and lashes.  Once you have applied your thin (and am assuming wobbly, if you are still reading) line pretty much along the roots of the lashes, take a matte black powder eyeshadow on a thin, angled brush and press it on to the line.  The powder will set the liner and also even out any bits and pieces that you might have missed, and nobody would know you cheated :D
  • A makeup artist's tip to cheat on liquid eyeliner application:  If you have an unsteady hand, sketch the shape you want with an eyeliner, then intensify it with the liquid liner, holding the liner on its side for more control - this one is by James Boehmer, Director of Global Artistry for NARS.
Now that you have lined and cheated your way to liquid liner fabulousness, finish off with some mascara and a softer lip color or a lipgloss for an easy, wearable makeup look!

Lipstick of the Day: Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur

I have quite a lot of lipstick samples lying around, and since I don't really go out/use makeup much on a regular basis, I doubt ever if I would ever finish these off or buy full-size versions of any of them.  Some of these lipsticks I actually like a lot, so I figured I will just post a color every day and at least use them up that way.  The first lipstick I am posting is the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur.  I have tried a lot of Chanel products, but for some reason, I never bothered buying the Rouge Coco Shines.  I always felt something that sheer would never show up on my lips.  Chanel's Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur is one color that does show up.  It is a a deep, dark berry shade with silver shimmer in it and quite dark but sheers out nicely into a lovely berry-pink shade on my lips.

The lipstick is quite balmy and sheer yet has enough pigmentation to actually show up quite well on my lips.  The downside to being so moisturizing - it doesn't last very long and disappears in about an hour or two leaving behind the silver shimmer.  I would definitely recommend Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur to anyone looking for an easy-to-use moisturizing lipstick, though I still haven't gotten around to buying one for myself :P

Lush Curly Wurly Shampoo

Lush Curly Wurly Shampoo - Review
Lush Curly Wurly Shampoo

I don't have curly hair - am more of a wavy-haired girl - but with my dry, frizz-prone hair, I figured if something can tame curly hair, it definitely can work on mine.  That's how I picked up Lush's Curly Wurly shampoo.  A thick, almost solid shampoo, Curly Wurly is a creamy coconutty goodness filled with small bits coconuts and with a sweet coconutty smell to it.

Lush Curly Wurly Shampoo - Review
Lush Curly Wurly Shampoo

My enthusiasm at buying this shampoo dimmed quite a bit when I got around to using it.  The thick fudgey texture meant I could not apply it to my hair without risking some broken strands.  It was almost like trying to apply a waxy cream on to my hair - never a bright idea :-|  I wasn't willing to give up that easily, though, and I patiently mashed and mixed up about 2 heaping tablespoons of this shampoo in about a cup of water and used that to lather up my hair.  Much better (if you have short hair, you can use it directly without all this fuss)!  After that initial hiccup sorted out, things moved along quite nicely.  The shampoo lathers up very well and washes off just as easily.  The bits of coconut do stick on to my hair but nothing that some extra water can't take care of.  Despite being a shampoo loaded with butters, I do need to follow this up with a conditioner.  Finer hair than mine might not need one, though.  The shampoo does leave a bit of a residue which helps tame frizzy hair and define the curls, but when used on a regular basis, it can cause a buildup issue and you might want to throw in a clarifying shampoo every once in a while.

Lush Curly Wurly Shampoo - Ingredients
Lush Curly Wurly Shampoo - Ingredients

Overall, Lush's Curly Wurly is a good shampoo for those with frizz-prone, curly/wavy hair (or thicker hair).  Normal to fine hair might be weighed down with this, though you could alternate it with a clarifying shampoo and skip the conditioner.  Curly Wurly leaves hair soft and nourished, but like all Lush shampoos, the lack of silicone in the product means you will never get the sort of silkiness that you get with silicone-based haircare products, so it does take some getting used to.  Also, the problem of buildup with Lush shampoos is a lot more obvious when using hard water.

Personally, I like using Lush products because of the natural and organic ingredients that they use - hoping that it would benefit my hair in the long run.  If you haven't tried Lush haircare before, I would suggest trying a sample before spending the money on a full-size bottle.

Makeup Primers: Uses, Benefits, How to Apply

I first heard the term "primer" on an episode of What Not To Wear.  The lady featured on the show worked as a truck driver, so pink lipstick and bright eyeshadows won't be a part of her daily wear-to-work routine.  What Carmindy (the makeup artist on the show) recommended was regular skincare with a moisturizer, followed by a primer.  This, she said, would keep her face looking fresh without looking made up and would also form a slight barrier against the skin-irritating pollutants that she would encounter as part of her work - and the difference was subtle yet obvious - and that's how I started experimenting with primers.

Makeup Primers Uses Benefits How to Apply Indian Beauty Blog Basics

How do makeup primers work:  Depending on what you are looking for, makeup primers are available in a variety of formulations and serve just as many varied purposes.  At it's most basic, a primer works by filling in skin irregularities and smoothening it so that any makeup you apply over it glides on much more easily.  This also means that you can get away with applying lesser product than you would normally use.  Most products that form this smooth, velvety film are pretty high in silicones, and might not be suitable for all skin types.  Some I have tried include DHC Velvet Skin Coat.  I also got myself a tube of the much raved about Smashbox Photo Finish primer but haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

Makeup Primers Uses Benefits How to Apply Indian Beauty Blog Basics

How to Apply Makeup Primers:  I usually apply a primer following my regular moisturizer - apply the moisturizer, allow it to absorb, and then apply the primer.  The one thing I have noticed with primers, especially the smoothening/film-forming ones, is that using a smaller quantity of product provides the best results.  Use about a pea size or less and spread it over the entire face.  Primers form a layer over the skin and aren't meant to be absorbed into the skin, so use spreading motions rather than trying to rub it into the skin.

Makeup Primers Uses Benefits How to Apply Indian Beauty Blog Basics

Is it necessary to use a makeup primer?  I love the effect that some of the brightening primers give - a healthy well-rested sort of look - and I do tend to use them on their own, without any other makeup except for maybe a powder, when I am in a no-makeup mood or just out on a short errand.  The pore-minimizing/smoothening primers do a wonderful job at providing a smooth canvas for any further makeup, but partly because I have sensitive skin that doesn't take too well to silicones and also because it's just another extra step, I almost never use these.  So the short answer to whether or not you do need a primer is - it depends :D  If you have a long day ahead and absolutely need your makeup to stay on without the fuss of extra touch-ups, you might want to give primers a try.  Also great if you are looking for something to make your skin looked polished but do not want to bother with too much foundation/makeup.

Find primers too much of a hassle?  Try a silicone-based moisturizer such as Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel since it does smoothen out the skin to some degree.  So, that was my take on primers.  Do you use primers - any favorites?

L'Oreal Color Riche Lipstick in Make Me Blush: Review, Swatch, FOTD

Creamy, rich, and moisturizing, the L'Oreal Color Riche lipsticks are some of my favorite lipsticks.  They feature moisturizing ingredients like argan oil, omega-3, and vitamin E to keep lips nourished and hydrated and are available in 54 colors, so there's definitely something for everyone there.  The shade I am reviewing today is L'Oreal Color Riche lipstick in Make Me Blush (250) - a reddish pink color with maybe a teeny bit of brown to it.  The packaging is a dull bronze-gold with a subdued matte finish to it.  As with all L'Oreal Color Riche lipsticks I have tried so far, this too has a strong rose-ish fragrance to it.

A creamy reddish pink shade with a hint of brown to it, this does not have any shimmer or frost in it.  Applied with a lip brush, this goes on a teeny bit sheer and lets the natural lip color show through a bit, though this won't be a problem unless you have really pigmented lips like I do.  Just apply it directly from the tube if you want more opaque coverage.

Though I really cannot find anything to fault in this, it's just one of those lipsticks I don't really reach for that often.  I have no idea why - I amn't terribly fond of it.  The lipstick is nondrying and does stay about 3 to 4 hours on me if I don't eat/drink anything that long :P

Sensual, warm, spicy vanilla with a hint of nuttiness - that's what I get with a spritz of the Burberry Brit Eau de Toilette.  Just the right sweetness and grown up without being old ladyish, Burberry Brit is for you if casual yet sophisticated is your style.  The sweetness from the vanilla is mellowed out with woody, musky notes and the hint of fruit gives it a freshness.  The Burberry Brit is one of the few fragrances that actually lasts on my skin, yet it has no overpowering notes and stays subtle from start to finish.  I would pick this as one of those perfumes that I can wear to office with just as much ease as to a dinner and a perfect fall/winter fragrance.

3 Things I Didn't Know About the Fountains At Bellagio

The Bellagio Fountains apparently make for one of the best shows in Las Vegas - whether paid or free - and they sure make an impressive sight.  A lot of planning and work goes into each flawless awe-inspiring performance, most of which I only found out when I got back home looked up online.  Three things I never knew about these fountains:

#1.  The lake where the fountain show is held is an 8½-acre body of water and is illuminated at night by about 5,000 lights. The foutains:  798 "minishooters," 208 swaying "oarsmen," 192 "super shooters," and 16 "extreme shooters" capable of gushing nearly 500 feet in the air.  A fog system also helps designers create moods.

#2.  Lake maintenance includes staffers and divers to fish out coins and wedding rings and boats to rescue people who decide to take a swim.  Two vacuums on a barge are used to suck up coins that are tossed into the lake for good luck - dried in a cement mixer and donated to Habitat for Humanity.

#3.  Not a single show has been missed due to technical problems - in 13 years!

Because of the fabulous lightingting used in this show, night-time is when you should ideally catch a display of the fountains, but I managed to catch them earlier on in the evening, and got a small video to share (thanks to Mr. Rads).

Happy Friday everyone :D

The Bodyshop's Kabuki Bronzing brush has had me fascinated ever since I spotted on the TBS website.  I haven't seen it in India, and I don't think it is available there, at least not that I know of (do let me know if it is).  I don't own any proper bronzers, but that won't stop me from picking this when I spot it on sale, would it? :D :D

The brush features a bronzish gold handle and densely packed, supersoft synthetic bristles that flare into a broad round dome.  The top of the brush isn't flat, and the rounded dome picks up just enough of the product to provide a light, even application.  Currently, I use this with my more orange-brown blushes - pretending they can pass off as bronzers!  It also is fabulous for a light dusting of powders, applying just enough to give a softer look to the skin but staying short of looking cakey.  As with all the TBS brushes I have tried so far, I haven't had any shedding issues with the bristles, and they are just as soft as they were the day I bought this brush.  Overall, a great buy, especially if you pick it up during one of the many TBS sales.  Also perfect for those of you on the lookout for cruelty-free makeup products and accessories.

If you ever drop by at Max Brenner, do look out for George.  Superfriendly, awfully helpful
and patient (I can confuse just about anyone), and takes fabulous photos too :D
I had a really quick stop and I really couldn't do justice to the chocolate yummmmminess that is Max Brenner, but I did manage to snap some photos before demolishing the croquettes.  As a borderline vegetarian, my food options were a bit limited here, but I did try the Molly's White Corn Croquettes and one of their Alice Cup Chocolate Frappes.  I would love to describe more, but partly because that's about all I ate there and also because I am hungry enough to eat the computer right now, I am stopping and leaving you with the photos :P

The corn croquettes are a must-try there, and I love how they serve it in this long glass tray.  If nobody was watching, I would have licked the sauce off the tray :|  And the Frappes - two words - NEVER SHARE..oh, and another two - ORDER LARGE.

While they aren't anything like the original Asian BB creams, a lot of the more mainstream/common makeup brands - both higher end as well as drugstrore - have come up with their own versions of BB creams, claiming to provide anything from sun protection to a fabulous complexion.  Maybelline's Dream Fresh BB Cream claims to work it's miracles in 8 ways from protecting to blurring imperfections. So does this 8-in-1 wonder cream deliver on all the promises?   Read on to find out.

The Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream is available in 4-5 shades, covering shades from light to dark.  I picked up the one for medium/deep skin tones.  It's a little less yellow than my go-to tinted moisturizer from NARS, but the product is quite sheer and ends up blending pretty well with my skin tone.

As with most sunblocks, I do get a teeny tiny bit of a white cast with the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream, but I don't even notice it in about half an hour, so it's not an issue for me, and it doesn't show up ashy in photos.  As a sunscreen, I actually found this product really nice.  It's nongreasy, has not caused any breakouts, and most importantly has kept my skin safe on some really hot sunny days.  The theory about sunscreens keeping you looking "fair" and/or "preventing tanning" does not work for me (and I find it almost impossible to reapply every 2 hours), but this does help avoid the burning sensation that I get with prolonged sun exposure.

Here's how the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream looks on me - before the tan really set in :D

The product is quite light and sheer and does not really offer anything in terms of coverage, or "blurring" as Maybelline puts it.  I bought this to use as a sunscreen only - not for any coverage or skincare miracles - but since it's mentioned on the packaging, I have to say it does not work that way at least for me.  I use this over my regular moisturizer, and it doesn't add any extra oiliness to my skin nor does it provide a totally matte finish.  If I was staying in a more humid area, I might need a slight dusting of powder.  My one BIG gripe with the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream is with the packaging.  While it's a tiny tube and quite convenient for travel, this is a bit of a runny product, and a lot of it just pops out soon as I open the cap.  At first, I thought it was due to in-flight pressure changes, but it seems the same even now so am not really very sure. Overall, though, I am quite happy with this cream/lotion.  As an inexpensive sunscreen, I would absolutely recommending giving this a try especially if you are someone who stays away from sunscreens because of the fear of an acne attack.
