Josie Maran Argan Love Your Lips Hydrating lipstick ($22) is a 3-in-1 lipstick with a core of lipstick and a moisturizing clear balm surrounding it.  These lipsticks combine the hydrating effects of a gloss, the pigmentation of a lipstick, and the glossy shine from a lipgloss.  This is definitely not a new product - loads of other brands have similar products - but it's the first time I am trying out something like this.  Like most Josie Maran products, these lipsticks too are housed in a classy rose gold-bronze metallic casing.  They are available in 6 shades, and I got to try out 3 of these - Berry Bliss, Happy Honey, and Fuchsia Frolic.  Scroll on for more photos and swatches.

Josie Maran Argan Love Your Lips Hydrating Lipstick - Happy Honey

The Josie Maran Hydrating lipsticks are a bit of a novelty for me.  The slim core of lipstick really does pack a lot of pigment and the clear lip balm surrounding it definitely offers a good boost of hydration and shine.  The three colors I tried out - Berry Bliss, Happy Honey, and Fuchsia Frolic - are all equally good.  The bright Fuchsia Frolic is definitely my favorite of the three, though.

Wearing Josie Maran Argan Love Your Lips Hydrating Lipstick in Berry Bliss.I usually stay away from darker/red lipsticks, but this is definitely one of the more easy to wear reds because of the sheer formula.  The color is opaque enough to cover my unevenly pigmented lips without piling on too much of the lipstick.

Wearing Josie Maran Argan Love Your Lips Hydrating Lipstick in Happy HoneyA nude/neutral lipstick that doesn't wash me out as much as some of the other beiges can, probably because it has a bit of a rosy undertone to it.  The color is sheerer than the other two but I think I can get away with no liner.

The slim core of lipstick really does pack a lot of pigment and the clear lip balm surrounding it adds enough hydration and shine.  These are slightly sheer lipsticks, and being more of a lipgloss girl, I generally prefer this sort of a formula over the more opaque lipsticks.  As would be expected with most sheer lipsticks, these last only about 1 to 2 hours on me.  The only downside to these lipsticks, though, is the design.  If used directly on the lips, the core of lipstick applies the color in a thinner line (like in the swatches) while the clear balm portion goes on separately.  That's okay if you don't mind the casual wash of color application that you would get with just rubbing the color into the lips but not if you are looking for a more precise coverage.  I would suggest using a lip brush to mix the color and the balm and then apply.  Also, these lipsticks do better if used as a sheer wash - that's what they are meant to be.  Layering on more of the lipstick does give a brighter color and more coverage, but the lipstick looks patchy on the lips.

Overall, though, I quite liked the formula and the colors (that I tried) from the Josie Maran Argan Love Your Lips Hydrating lipsticks.  The colors are pretty and the lipstick feels good on the lips.  Available at Sephora (online and in-store) and on the Josie Maran website.

    1. Oh, that's too bad! I have a feeling something similar would be available in Maybelline or L'Oreal - at least similar in terms of the color. And, thank you! :)
