Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee is a gel-like blush - looks like a wobbly jelly but it doesn't really wobble at all and feels somewhat like a softened balm.  It comes packaged in a glass pot and is soft enough to be picked up and applied with fingers.  The cheek gelees are available in a variety of colors, and the one I am reviewing today is Getaway Red.  The color is a true red that starts light and can be built up to quite an intense red, yet it retains a degree of sheerness even if when it's layered giving it a very natural appearance.  Scroll on for more photos.

The surface of this cheek gelee looks so smooth and water-like, I almost didn't want to use it to avoid spoiling the finish!  My camera, though, just won't focus on such a smooth surface and since I can't possibly review without using, I had to finally dig in :P  The texture of the blush is like a softened balm.  It feels like water on the skin - slightly wet thought not cooling or tingly.  The formula is easy to apply and blend and can be worn sheer or intense with a bit of layering.  Getaway Red looks a scary red in the pot, but it it gives a lovely, very natural appearing flush when applied lightly.  It's easy to get the color to show up even on my darker skin tone.  Here's a look at the swatches.

Additional makeup used:
MUFE HD Invisible Cover Foundation #170
Lips:  Burberry Lip Velvet Longwear Lipstick in Redwood
Eyes:  L'Oreal HIP eyeshadow duo Shady all over lid.
UD eyeliner in Ether smudged along lashline.
Matte black shadow applied as a thin line along lashline.

UD Demolition on waterline.
YSL Baby Doll mascara (which, btw, is AWESOME).

The formula of the Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee is a bit of a novelty for me.  These seem similar to cream blushes, but I prefer the formula of the gelees over regular cream blushes.  The color doesn't stain the skin right away or get absorbed into the skin immediately, so there is enough time to blend the color and work it into the skin.  The finish is very natural, and the color lasts the whole day on my cheeks - almost like a stain.  Getaway Red is a color that should look great across a lot of skin tones, mostly because it's the sort of color that most people naturally blush to.  If you are on the lookout for a good creamish-gel blush that is easy to work with but doesn't leave skin too oily (I like the slight dewiness it gives, but you could powder over it), do give the Josie Maran Cheek Gelee a try.  It definitely is the best blush I have tried in a long time.

  3. Hi Radhika,
The color of the blush really suits you. I got 'Pink Escape' for myself and although I love the blush, I do have to closely monitor the amount I use so I don't resemble a clown! :)

    1. Hi Sonali...thank you! I know what you mean - clown face is like my nightmare too :D :D I apply very lightly in real life (outside of photos) and sometimes I have to accept it's barely visible, but I prefer that to overcolored cheeks anyday! I find it easier to apply these sort of blushes with a stippling brush. I use the larger MAC 187 but I think one of their smaller versions would be the ideal one to use...
