Easy Fall Makeup Look - Berry Lips and Navy Liner |
Autumn has always been my favorite season. I love the fresh cold air and the beautiful fall colors on the leaves, but what I have been finding a bit inconvenient is the lack of light! I have quite a few houseplants, and the windowsill is now prime real estate with stiff competition over which lucky few get to call it home for the next couple of months. Of course, good looks always help, and some orchids and a nonstop blooming African violet have already snagged spots there. The beautiful flowers do add a lovely splash of color to the otherwise grey, drab days. The same has been working for me in terms of makeup. It's the time of the year I tend to reach for richer colors, and while I have never really embraced the vampy dark lip, I do wear a lot of pinks and berries this time of the year. My makeup last weekend was just that - a pink-berry lip and a navy liner. After numerous failed attempts, I have given up on the winged liner, but of late, I have been extending out the liner just a tiny bit to help give a slightly more elongated look to my eyes. It's simple makeup that is perfect for a cool fall day, and here's a quick makeup how-to.

Easy Fall Makeup Tutorial - Berry Lips and Navy Liner - Steps |
1. Start with primed eyelids. I have used Urban Decay's Primer Potion (Original), and this helps keep the eyeshadow in place and show up a bit more vibrant.
2. Use a fluffy eyshadow brush to apply a warm bronze-brown shade all over lid. Take the eyeshadow to just above the crease. Using a pencil brush, smudge the same eyeshadow along the lower lashline. Using a soft matte peach-beige eyeshadow on a fluffy eyeshadow brush, blend along the edges of this bronze eyeshadow to soften any harsh edges and add a soft highlight under the browbone.
3. Using a darker matte brown eyeshadow on a pointed blending brush, softly blend the eyeshadow along outer corner of eyelid to add a hint of definition and darkness. Using a pencil brush, blend a bit of the same eyeshadow along outer corner of lower lashline.
All the eyeshadows I have used are from the Maybelline The Nudes palette. I bought this palette just to try it out and review on the blog, but I have used it so often now, I have to admit it is a convenient one to have if most of your eye makeup involves browns and bronzes.
4. Using a sharp pencil eyeliner, draw a thin line along the upper lashline, keeping it quite thin along the inner corner and a little thicker as it extends towards outer corner. Extend the line slightly outwards, following the natural line/curve of the lashline.
For the liner, I used Smashbox Always Sharp Kohl pencil in French Navy*. It is a twist-up pencil, but the twisting mechanism is in the cap of the pencil rather than at the end like with most other pencils. Every time you twist open the cap, the pencil tip is freshly sharpened and twisted out to the same length as a brand new pencil. It does take some getting used to, though, because I cannot get over the urge to twist out a long bit of pencil, and there's no way to do that with this kohl. That said, I love the color, and it lasts the day without smudging (it's waterproof). It's the perfect pencil to use if you like to use the liner very close to the lashes and/or want thin lines.
6. Curl lashes and finish with black mascara.

For the rest of my face, I stuck to my usual foundation-concealer routine, using Dior Nude Air foundation and NARS radiant creamy rconcealer along with a bit of YSL Touche Eclat. Darker lipsticks tend to make the rest of my face look a bit sallow, so I always add a highlighter to bring some glow to the face (my favorite is Becca Shimering Skin Perfector in Opal). To add a bit of color to the cheeks and balance out the darker lip color, I opted for a bright pink blush - MAC Prom Princess which was a limited edition from the MAC Archies collection.

Some of the products used: MAC Prom Princess blush, Smashbox French Navy kohl liner*, Smashbox lipstick Vivid Violet*, Maybelline The Nudes eyeshadow palette |
The lipstick I have used is Smashbox Be Legendary lipstick in Vivid Violet*. Described as a bold berry, this lipstick can built up to an opaque purplish berry shade if you prefer a bolder lip color, but I like the sheerer softer version. The color as well as the creamy balmy texture of the lipstick is perfect for wearing in colder months. As for the MAC Prom Princess blush, it's one of the few limited edition releases that has been worth scrambling for :D
