Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro ($38 each at Sephora) |
Matte lip colors seem to be quite popular this year, and for those who like this matte lip trend, there are so many new and not-so-new options from a whole lot of brands to choose from. I amn't a huge fan of the flat matte finish, though, mostly because it looks just a little too dry and cakey on my already prone-to-dryness lips. I prefer a softer velvety finish like these Giorgio Armani's Lip Maestro Intense Velvet Matte Stains. These have a soft creamy finish that's somewhere between a creamy finish and a matte liquid lipstick, and the lightweight formula combines the ease of wear of a lipgloss with the more vibrant, rich color payoff usually seen in liquid lipsticks. The color range has some bright reds and oranges as well as a few softer peach-pink shades and neutrals. Scroll on for swatches.

Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro Intense Velvet Matte Stain - Swatches 508 Pearly Nude / 509 Ruby Nude |
The Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro Intense Velvet Matte Stains are described as soft matte lip stains that leave a luminous matte finish on the lips. The application can be controlled to give more opaque but creamy finish (a single swipe with the flocked applicator) or a slightly softer matte look if dabbed on lightly and patted with finger. On swatches, the colors didn't really dry down to a complete matte finish but stayed a soft creamy finish. This might be a bit disappointing for those looking for a true matte lip color - but I think the Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro formula is a lot more lip friendly and won't emphasize lip lines and/or dryness as much. There is a good mix of colors, with some classic reds that would make for great fall/winter picks as well as bright pops of orange and pink that would make for great summer colors. My favorites, of course, would be the softer, wear-any-time colors like 202 Dolci or 501 Casual Pink.
Overall, a good pick if you like richer pigmented lip colors like those seen with matte liquid lip colors but in a softer finish and a more lip-friendly formula. For those looking for a true matte lip color, the Bare Minerals Nude Gen Matte Liquid lip colors would be the perfect.
