Smudged Shimmer: Blue-Brown Eye Makeup Look

Smudged Shimmer:  Blue-Brown Eye Makeup Look

I tend to stay away from glittery shimmery makeup and with good reason.  Glitter has a way of finding the tiniest wrinkles and pores and settling in there until it's magnified for the whole world to see.  Plus, it's a pain to get rid of without some sort of double cleansing.  Despite all that, when I noticed glitter popping up as one of the makeup trends this year, I was intrigued, and with the cold, grey weather we have been having, this seemed like the perfect time to try a shimmery, glittery liner.  Rather than use a glitter/shimmer eyeshadow, I opted for a subtly smudged navy eyeliner.  Scroll on for products used and an easy how-to.

1.  Start with primed eyelids.  Place a wash of taupe-brown eyeshadow all over the lids, blended out along the crease.
2.  Apply shimmery blue eyeliner along the upper lashline.  Don't apply this too thick, unless you want the shimmer all over the lids.  I wanted to keep the glitter closer to the lashline.
3.  Smudge the liner slightly, keeping the shimmer close to the lashline.  I did extend the color toward the outer corner (which isn't a great idea if you have wrinkles along the corner like I do).
4.  Apply the same eyeliner in a thin line close to the upper lashline.  Also apply the same liner about a third of the way in along the lower lashline.  Keep the line thin and keep it close to the lashline.  Using a freshly sharpened pencil liner helps with this.
5.  Tightline and line along the waterline with a dark matte brown smudge-proof eyeliner.  Again, use a freshly sharpened liner and ensure that no gaps or bare spots are visible between the lashes.  Use the shimmery blue liner to add a few dots between the lower lashes, toward the inner corner.  This creates an illusion of smudged liner without any actual smudging or blending involved.  Finish with curled lashes and mascara.

For the rest of my face makeup, I used my usual foundation-concealer routine:  Dior Nude Air Serum Foundation, Clea de Peau Concealer, and YSL Touche Eclat.  For the cheeks, I used Chanel cream blush in Revelation and a mix of Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Naked and Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Vivienne.

I have oily-combination skin, and my eyelids tend to get oily through the day.  Wearing a glittery/shimmery liner like this probably won't work for me during the warmer months, but it is perfect for this time of the year.
